Is there a new Inova X5 yet?

The other thread seemed to talk about the luxan lights. Any word on if the X5 is getting better LED's?

Are there 5mm LEDs out that are significantly brighter or more effecient than the Nichia CS that were in the last upgrade ~1 year ago?

I dont think they will change the design...its as simple as resistored LED seemblies, yet they out perforum many other 5 led lights on the market in terms of quality, build, throw, runtime, water resistance, etc.

Why change a design when its perfect?:huh2:

There really are no better 5mm LEDs than what Inova uses (Nichia CS), with the possible exception of the THC3 LED's, which are not, from what I gather, single-die LED's. So the X5 will probably not get an upgrade until Nichia (or Luxeon, or Cree) put out something brighter and/or more efficient in the 5mm package.

Yeah, while I like the idea of an X5 with 5 SMJLEDs, the decrease in runtime probably wouldn't make much sense. The current X5 with the CS LEDs is probably the best product they can make at this time.

I honestly dont see a reason/justification to change the X5. It is just about the perfect incarnation of this type of multiple led light (in my opinion). Changing and losing any runtime would hurt it greatly. Making it any larger would hurt it. Actually, making it brighter would hurt in some ways.

It does not need to be brighter, it is a good balance, there are brighter lights, this one fills a niche. It lights up a good sized room very well, or a good part of the back yard in a wide flood with a nice glow that is not harsh on the eyes like larger brighter lights and does it for hours.

There are other lights for more throw, higher output lights. Leave the X5 for what it does extremely well.

If it only had a clickie!

Whether or not you like clickies more, part of the X5's appeal is being 100% indestructable and a clickie would take away from that.

Why would it have a decrease in runtime?

Well... to get the SMJLEDs running at full blast (ie 2 slightly conditioned primary lithium cells), they pull 160mA according to my DMM. I haven't measured an X5 with Nichia CS LEDs but unless it pulls 800mA... runtime would suffer.

Now perhaps if one were to use 5 SMJLEDs on a constant current board that pulled significantly less mA than stock yet retained the same output, then the SMJLEDs might seem like a good idea, but this would certainly be more of an end user mod than something Inova would consider. I'm sure they pay well under $1 each for the Nichia LEDs and even if they could get the SMJLEDs for $3 each, I can't see that more people would buy the X5 in droves because of a minor update in runtime.

agree with you 100 percent. Keep it just like it is, unless you get the same formfactor but higher efficiency so can run it longer on the same batteries.

although as a direct drive it already boasts 6 hours of output before diminishing to 50%, I suppose...priceline premitted, a regulation circuit wouldnt hurt:grin2::naughty:

actually, for almost the first 6 hours light declines very slowly, and in a fairly flat way. After that it goes down rapidly, but still gives useable light for several more hours.

so, in a way, you get most of the benefits of regulation (for almost 6 hrs anyway) but without the extra baggage of having an actual regulator - so the light is more robust and bulletproof that way, which is part of the appeal of the light.
