I've got a Surefire 9P problem!

Let me start as this isn't an incan vs. LED bash, I love my 9P, and still think the E2E is the single best light ever made and you are not a true flashaholic unless you own one!

So I have a Surefire 9P with the LF EO-9, I thought it was pretty badass, super throw, very bright, I couldn't ask for more, I was happy.
Now I have upgraded my Novatac 120P with a K2 emitter and it out throws my 9P:eek:oo: This isn't supposed to happen!! LED's don't out throw incans!!!
So now I have a single cell light that is stupid bright and runs for fifteen min, and a tripple cell light that the bulb manufacture only wants me to run for ten min., what can I do to make the 9P better? Or am I doomed to have to upgrade? I forget now, but about a year ago I had the chance at an M4, I am kicking myself now for not taking that deal!!:(

I say add a single cell extender and power that EO-9 with two 18650s.

There are several ways to go about this.

If you prefer incans, I suggest you invest in some AW rechargables to use instead of primaries.
You can also buy any number of LED "P60 style" replacements...Malkoff is highly recommended.

Using rechargables REALLY helps ease the blow of buying expensive 123's and some overdrive the bulb, thus making it brighter and whiter.

Here is a good thread to study:

the P91 lamp is actually brighter than the EO-9, it really cooks on 2 18650's as well. ;)

you'll have to bore out the body for the 18650's though..

2 17500's would work without an extender, or 2 17670's with an A19.

a KT2 with a MN16 lamp would fix your throw issue as well. :)

I've read that several times! Thank you!
I have bored it out already in anticipation of going with 18500's but really didn't think they would improve the power output that much. I understand they have less "sag", but I thought the voltage would remain close to the same?

And yes, I wish to stay incan with this light, I still like the color rendition of an incan better than an LED.

Relax!

Enjoy the 9P for what it is, a great incan. There will always be smaller, brighter, and longer running lights. But fewer will be more satisfying. The P90 LA is a great light engine.

I love SF incans. I currently have a E1e, E2D (or E2e), M3 (or C3), and M6 fueled and in my rotation.

Runtime ain't great but my favorite 9P config is an FM sunlight socket with a WA 1331, powered by 3x imr16340's. Outstanding combo.

I'm running the same sized host and cells with the WA1185, that is indeed a Sweet set up!!!, But I'm interested to know the difference between the '85 and the 1331.
( Only down side is that I'm slightly underwhelmed by the P91 now in comparison)

9P is a great versatile host. I used to think it seemed to big to EDC, but have one in my pocket right now, and I'm sat at an office at a desk today, so not to big for EDC.

The P91 is too much for 17500's and the EO-9 is really pushing it and will shorten the lives of those cells. Unfortunately AW doesn't make IMR 17500's either.

Ironically, the 18650's are a bit much for the P91 and could shorten its life drastically.

I think the IMR18500's are the best match for either lamp. Regular P18500's work well also.

Its about power and heat. the 85 drains the cells just to fast and produces just to much heat for this setup. The 31 'feels' as powerful, but with a lower amp draw, so you get that same wonderful color and beam for a lot longer.

Read here for more, especially post #2:

Because I bought this specificly to be my "pocket rocket" light. I had researched and found it to be a good light for this type of use and the price made it very attractive to me for this purpose.

NICE!! I like this, but the Sunlight socket seems as scarce as Hens teeth!

Edit: I did look into the KT2 turbo head, but for the money I think I am better off selling the 9P and buying an M4 for the money involved in that upgrade.

6P with P91 & 2 x IMR16340s. Pair it with a AW 3 level softstart switch to ROCK.

Leef 3x18650 with FM sunlight & WA1185. I did sell my second sunlight to Linger. Post a WTB on the sunlight - there may be others who have 2 that are only using 1.

I got a KT2 for $85 and change (OpticsHQ used to give a fantastic CPF discount), an A19 for $20, and MN60 for $20. My 9P cost $70. So my poorman's M4 was assembled for just under $200. So if you don't need a shock isolated bezel and a smaller diameter battery tube just pick up the parts on the Marketplace as they present themselves. This will give you a very modular assembly with lots of options.

My $70 light ended up costing me over $400 when you add up all the stuff I got for it, KL3, beam diffusers, clicky switches, holsters, LAs...

Right now it sports a KL3 w/beam diffuser and Z49. A very handsome looking light with both throw and glow.
