I'd provide reference links but not sure if they'd be removed so I'll leave them out for the time being. Does anyone have experience with both of these handhelds? They seem to be very close in overall size and specs, I'm curious how they stack up to each other in real world use.

I only have experience with the JilLite, two separate units, but I'd really enjoy doing a comparison if anyone owns a Microfire III that they'd be willing to share for an evaluation.

Owning a number of of lights and brands has allowed me to make some general observations about the different brands and I must say that the JilLite is one of the most impressive lights that I own. For one it has a Polarion reflector that is extraordinarily precise. Once you collimate the beam the hot spot is like a pinpoint and the lux numbers are through the roof. Second, the machining quality is surpassed by no light that I've ever owned or held. It's literally flawless in that regard. Lastly it does have a 4 cell carrier which provides more capacity than the microfire and overall the JilLite is still a good amount smaller. If nothing has changed, it's still the smallest 10W HID in existence which is kind of neat.

There are many threads about the EZNite but here is the most recent thread that I posted on it:

Hi Patriot,
I am in the market for a gift, don't mind up to 300 bucks or so, for the security guards at the Japanese college I work at. The cheapo administrators still have them lugging around huge under performing halogens. I pulled out my L35 and watched their eyes light up, and then pulled out my Barn Burner watched their hair stand on end.

I gave them a quick run down on LEDs and Lithium batteries, and I told them I would pick up something for them and they requested something light to carry on their rounds, and more of a thrower than with flood. I also surmised that the start up time for most HIDs is going to be prohibitive to their need for sudden and intermittent light ... otherwise, the JilLite sounds perfect. I was thinking of the Tiablo 9 with an aspheric, as I think it would still be small and outhrow the Deree's and the Jet Beam MX that I own. As a long time lurker at CPF, I've grown to respect your experience and opinions, so as they say in Japan, 'yoroshiku onegaishimasu' ... I am humbly begging you to indulge my request for advice.

Maybe this should be another thread?

Thanks BadHobbit, your remarks are humbling and undeserved by me since so many others are so much more knowledgeable than I. I would consider myself to be more of an observationalist I guess. Also, I consider you an equal so no begging allowed please...lol. :)

As you stated I'd really like to limit discussion on such a broad topic out of respect to brighterisbetter.

My short answer is that 10W HID's are not the way to go for the purpose you mentioned. They're slow to get to full output and inefficient compared to LED's. In my experience an aspheric LED is not a replacement to a halogen spotlight or conventional flashlight like the M1X. I consider them to be in a class of their own and used for specific special applications. If you're price range is up to $300 that really opens the doors for a great number of choices. If you're looking for an LED that will throw better than an M1X but isn't as special application as an aspheric take a look at the Tiablo A10 or Jetbeam Raptor which is soon to be released. The 24W "Tactical" HID (AC version) dicussed in recent threads and in the CPF Marketplace would also be something to think about because of the price. Cheaper yet would be the Stanley 35W HID which is getting rave reviews. It might even be smaller than what the guards are currently using while still being much more powerful. Startup time is also very fast according to the reviews. That would actually be my 1st choice if I was in the same position that you're in now.
