I have this JiL light but its not up o todays standard in brightness,I wanted to update it,so I was looking for ideas when I noticed that Orb ns was about the same size. I contacted Rob at Lummi and he agreed to make me a light engine to my specs, warm tint, about 130 to 150 lumens,no heat issues, use primary or RCR.On RCR it does gets warm, but not to hot. One stage, Bright. He said he would be willing to make more of these.
Here are the parts
Light engine
I did also have to order the custom reflector that Rob makes, the MCR does NOT focus .It was the worst beam ever,as expected. Also the DX reflectors do not fit in the JiL.I did have to sand the edge of the circuit board to clear the threads, It took about 2 minutes with a dremel on low.
I did put 2 orings on,one to prevent the retaining ring from touching the circuit(I also put clear nail polish on the bottom of the retaining ring to help eliminate and metal to metal contact.) The second ring was to hold the reflector centered.
Here is a view from the front, the custom reflector is about a MM shorter,so I used a second mineral glass lens to make up the space.(from Lummi)
Finally here is the beamshot!
It has beatiful tint and huge center spot with nice spill and NO cree rings! About as bright as nitecore D10 on max.
So I am extreamly pleased with the outcome,🙂 Rob was great to deal with he responded to every email(At least 8 of them) the next day.I now use the light all the time,it can compeat with any current light as far as brighness and I think it is one of the best looking lights ever made!
The best part is that it is compleatly reversable, I never touched the original light engine or reflector.I wanted to be able to preserve it as original(20 hour runtime stock if needed)
I may order a second light engine from Rob,I would like to try a 2 stage, that may make up the difference in height from the reflector being 1 mm short, the engine is made if 2 circuit boards, maybe a cool tint with low and 200 lumen high.
