Hi,
I am a newby here and first time posting so please forgive me if this is in the wrong section or has already been asked 1000 times but...

I am looking for a led flashlight for nightshooting possums and rabbits here in New Zealand so am looking for something with the best throw.

I currently have the Led lenser Hocus Focus, the Led Lenser P7 and the Aurora AK-P7 (which I am dissapointed in for a 900 lumen chip??)

My criteria is 1 or 2 18650 batts, 200+ lumens or much better, throw as far as possible, focusable head if possible or just a throwing reflector.

I was looking at the Fenix TK11 but don't think I'll be gaining much with that over the LL P7.

Many thanks in advance for any advice on what to get.

How about the Ultrrafire WF-500?
That should do the trick.

What distance are you normally shooting at?

using .17hmr which is capable out to 250m but most shooting down at less than 150m

I have had a quick look at the Dereelight and it looks a great light...

main reason for sticking to 18650 batts is that way I can fit it into a 25mm or 30mm scope ring for mounting above the scope, the LL P7 is quite narrow but due to being focusable can be opened up wider to whatever you want but then you loose brightness, the LL P7 is ok out to 100-150m so far...

Had a look at the Ultrafire WA500 and it looks identical to the Aurora AK-P7

cheers

All this talk about throw and the DBS is making me salivate. :naughty:

I tried to order mine two weeks ago but my girlfriend strongly urged me not to, then had that smirk on her face where she obviously knows something I don't. Guess my two Tiablo A9's and the Regalight WT-1 will have to do for now.

There's something addicting about throwers, know what I mean?

Tell her that if she can own more pairs of shoes than you own flashlights, then you've got some catching up to do and some balance is in order... she *is* your girlfriend and not your wife, right?
You'll have plenty of time to be broke after you're married.

.. and +1 on the DBS.

Ok have been looking real hard at the Dereelight DBS V2 but....

What version will give me the best possible throw?

1SM-2 using ext tube and 2 x 18650's

or

3SD Cree XR-E WC Q5 (SMO) 1 x 18650

or

3SD Cree XR-E 5A Q2 (SMO) 1 x 18650

does extra voltage of two batteries increase lumens or just increase battery life ?

cheers for the advice so far....

I am also wondering about this light. I haven't seen any lumen specifications, only lux readings; if you know where to direct me or tell me that would be a great help thanks!

The SD pills give 1.2 A to the led, while the SM pills give max 1 A, so the SD pills will give most light. Q5 led will give more light than Q2. So
3SD Cree XR-E WC Q5 (SMO) 1 x 18650 is the brightest of your alternatives and will give most throw.

I know of at least 2 DBS's here in tasmainia being used for shooting rabbit, possum, roo - 200 metre's no probs
nothing beats it in its class

PS: I use 1S with SMO now - also have 3SD but I don't need low med high coz its too much mucking around between levels - mostly because if you need to turn the light off and on in quick busts it will change the output (I use it for security as well also needing short bursts of light) - having 1S takes the guess work out of it - also its a thrower so why would you want lower settings - because the beam is so tightly focused its like following the bouncing ball at close work & your LL P7 will fill in for close work (I have a LL P7 as well - as you said they are great for up to 120 or so metres)

PPS: It will cost you less $AU V $US from here http://extremetorches.com.au/ I have dealt with them and they are great (dont just get the pill that comes with it as it only runs at 1.Amp - the S1,3SD,and DI run at 1.2Amp = more throw.
Hope that helps :)

I'm using a DBS with the 3SD pill and a hoya Y2 filter, fitted a modified lightforce mount to enable quick detach. I use it on both a .17hmr & a 7mmMag, works brilliantly!!

That's because the DBS is constructed for throw - and lumen specifications do not say
anything about the throw capability of a flashlight.

Simple math:
XR-E Q5 @ 1.2 A = ~260 lumen minus about 20% loss (reflector, lens) = roughly 200 lumen
out of the front.

spear is good - but they are out of manufacture now so parts will be harder to find as they age - also when you find a place to buy them they only come with OP so they wont throw as far - sorry but the DBS is still king of throw - cheaper than the spear & still in manufacture also they are easy to upgrade (kinda future proof-ish)
