hi guys,

I'm planning to use 3 "D" li-ion batteries from Kai that are rated @ 5000mah in one of my mag85 instead of nimh...

how is the overall quality of these batts?

and more important are the protected batteries just an unprotected cell with an additional protection circuit?

can you explain me some Pros and Cons of protected and unprotected li-ion?

will these batteries work safely driving a WA1185 with AW driver?

thanks in advance,

Filippo

Hi Filippo!

I have no experience with KD's li-ion cells, but can answer your general question a bit...

Protected li-ion cells have a circuit that prevents overdischarge of the cell. If a li-ion cell is discharged too deeply, it can become damaged and no longer function properly. When used in series with another li-ion cell, this can also lead to a more significant "damage" including a :poof: - which obviously with those chemicals could be a very bad thing. When a protected cell reaches it's designed low end voltage, it basically shuts itself "off."

I'm curious to see feedback from others who've used this cell - 3 D li-ions should run a Mag85 for a long time!

I'm using 2 of those cells (unprotected blue ones) to drive my Mag275. The black 2D protected pack wouldn't start the 64725. But the 1185 doesn't draw as much so the protection might not be an issue. When using that many Lithium Ion cells, it's always a good idea to have a protected pack. The greater number of cells increases the possibility of having an out of balance cell. I use a balance charger, even for 2 cells. So I don't have to worry as much about an out of balance cell.

In the thread about them, it was the verdict that the protection kicked in too soon. They would not light the ROP high.

thanks for your replys...

I think I'll try out 3 unprotected...seems that the protection circuit used in protected one is crap, right?

can you give me some advice on how to charge these batteries?
I have an E-station BC6 but I don't really know how to charge them in only one run...do I need some balance wires or something like that?
