Sold/Expired KL1 and KL3 mods

Help Support CPF:

Dizney,

What did you think about that stock bias mod. It was the one with the tape on it. Pretty bright at the stock bias, isn't it. The KL3 runs at almost 450mA in stock form. On a three cell body, that thing will run for a LONG time. I'd have to guess around 5 hours.

Definitely...the KL3 mod running at the stock bias is still very bright. The reflector you installed transformed it into one serious light.

Dizney,

Glad to hear it. Man, you had so many done at once, I spent the whole afternoon on just YOUR stuff. LOL

Re: KL1 mods

Tony , How close are your kl1 mods to the new kl1 ? I was just thinking that if the diference was not that big maby I should have my mod left at stock bias and you should just install a reflector .(I have ordered a new Kl1) The KL1 that I am sending you is a first run kl1 so it is a low dome LED for sure . Does that cause a problem doing a stock bias mod compaired to a high dome LED ?

Re: KL1 mods

Kenny,

Are you sending me a KL1? I don't have any record of it in PayPal, or did we make other arrangements?

The way I mod a KL1 is nothing like the new KL1.

The beam of the newest KL1 is similar to that of the, once very popular Fraen LP optic, and the beam is all throw and no sidespill. I don't think it's a very practical beam and won't do well in general purpose use, but people are raving about it. Either they've never seen a hopped up light or they just really like it.

With a modded older style KL1, you might (and probably will) loose some throw, as compared to the newest KL1; however, you will gain a very bright, utilitarian beam. The reflectored KL1 will provide a more conventional beam comprised of both a hotspot for throw, and sidespill for peripheral lighting and close up work.

If you choose to go with the stock bias, I won't try to talk you out of it, because that's the way I run my KL1. You'll be surprised at the amount of light that it will put out with a nice Lux III and the reflector. Not to mention the four hours of runtime you'll get on 2X123 or 5+ hours of runtime you'll get on 3X123.

If I was told that I would have to choose a light to be stranded in the woods with, the mod you're talking about would definitely be on the list.

Re: KL1 mods

I have a CM-modded KL1, 500mA with R2K and NX05 on the way and should be able to do some beamshots soon.

I'm starting to believe the 500mA current level is the way to fly, given the point of diminishing returns when you go to higher drive levels. I initially wanted an Aleph, but someone offered the classic KL1 at this drive level, and I went for it. I prefer the Surefire electronics, because of their versatility. A NG or BB would have given me only boost, a DB would force me to use two cells, and a Wiz2 doesn't bleed batteries dry below the 2.5V level, neither does it tolerate up to 9V (2xR123 requirement).

Amazing what the KL1 with an emitter swap and a current boost - all there is to it is changing the LED and a resistor. I always thought the world of my existing stock KL1, but here the poor light gets beaten up by the newcomer, we haven't even changed the optics yet!

Tony,

Yes, that is two now (the LuxIII L1 and this LuxIII KL1). Both work great.

What is this about Firefly mods? What sort of work have you been doing on them?

Thanks again,
Danny

I have finally fulfilled my obligation!!!

Now I can REALLY enjoy the KL3!!!

Tony,

Sending a PM in regards to having two KL1's modded. I guess having 5 of your creations isn't enough. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The runtimes for a stock KL3 are around 4 hours for a two cell and 5+ for three cell which is why I like it. My current setup (I'm still a newb) is a 6P for when I want a powerful light and I got the KL3 specifically for the longer runtime for everyday use. If I had my KL3 modded with the reflector, Lux III, and bump it up to 850mA from stock what will it do to runtime? Does it boost the throw and overall output to p60 levels while also diminishing runtime to p60 levels or does it take up a happy medium? Sorry if this is stupid question. I would really like more throw from the KL3 but not if it compromised my main purpose in having it.

Cypher,

The 8??mA current that I am getting is double the stock bias, what ever that may be. It differs from one unit to the next. I'd say the runtime is roughly cut in half when you go to the 850mA bias. As for performance, I'm thinking that the KL3 at 850mA will kick the 6P's butt in terms of all out throw. Of course, the incand will have a better flood out to medium distances, but in a pitching match, the KL3 will be it.

If you are just looking to clean up the beam, you could just have the KL3 modded with a high dome luxeon and reflector. The high dome will be a higher flux bin than the low dome in there and you will gain output simply by virtue of the bin of the luxeons that I use. Going with the reflector will get you more output because the 27mm reflector is just plain more efficient than the NX05 that you have now. Believe me, leaving the bias at stock and going with the Lux III and reflector will make a nice and day difference. You'll be surprised at the throw you'll get from the KL3, even at the stock bias, which is around 430mA.

My modding thread is here... Link to mods

If you want to get the mod with just the lux swap and reflector, knock $10 off of the price of the mode. Follow the instructions in the link for the rest of the info.

If you go with the full mod, you'll have a KL3 that will perform on par with any Aleph I or McLux light. Your stock 6P head may very well wind up on BST after you see the modded KL3 in full form.

After having experienced hotrodded LED lights, I don't have any incands any more. Well, I have one, an M3. I run a modded KL2 on that, but keep the stock head and lamps for when I sell it. The incand head never sees service. I've just grown too accustomed to having light that doesn't dim and I can't remember the last time I bought a replacement LA.

Tony,
Thanks for the prompt reply and all the info. Definately food for thought......

I just want to share this picture of my KL3 modded by Tony in good company with some of my other beauties. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hmmm... this will be better... especially for you Britt! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tony,

I received the modded KL1s today.....it's really amazing how you transformed these lights. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/faint.gif Just curious, but what rank LEDs did you transplant into the heads? I also like the vastly improved sidespill coverage too....more than the U2 that I picked up a few hours ago.

Dizney,

With the intended battery configuration and use of the two stage switches, I went with TWOKs. They should have given you a good color tint too.
