The L1D-CE runs ok on a 14500, although you'll only get turbo and strobe until the voltage drops quite a way. The head is the same as the P2D-CE, which uses a single lithium cell. You should get about the same run time as a P2D-CE using an RCR-123 cell, which has about the same capacity as a 14500. I measured 31 minutes on Turbo with the P2D-CE/RCR-123A combination.

Thanks! I had no idea. I'll have to get set up with 14500s from Lighthound!

You forgot to mention that it gets pretty hot and the head will kick into regulation when the Lion drops below 3.0v which is when the protection circuit of the protected Lion kicks in to avoid over discharges. So that means running lion on Fenix is a show stopper since you lose the other modes, gets hot and the light runs on direct drive througout the lions battery cycle. For that i'd just go to DX and get some ultrafire lights which they run just fine on RCR's no need to get a fenix for that. It's been extensively discussed in the past. However the fenix does very well in regulation so just stay with the rated battery.
