L2D-CE flashes when switched on

I received the L2D-CE I ordered from Fenix-Store today. While playing around with it, I noticed that the light, when set in normal mode, "flashes" (when switched on) for a moment more brightly than the mode in which it's set. It does not, however, do this in turbo mode.

Is this normal, or is the light defective? I find it kind of annoying; if I were to exchange the light is this so common that I probably would get another light with the same effect?

All three of mine do it, and as far as I have heard (there was a thread on this already) 100 % of them do it. Not sure why. You won't notice it on turbo because you are turning on a mode just as bright as the flash. Most, myself included, felt it was not a bother, some cited other digital lights not having it, and so felt Fenix could and should have chased this little "character flaw" out of the circuit design. By the way, I have seen on later lights the same flash when changing up from low to medium, not just at power on. I can't tell if yours does that from your wording, but my "first batch" ones only flash at power up to low. In short, your light is NOT a "defect" 🙂.

Okay, thanks.

I find it annoying, but not too annoying. Everything else about the flashlight is pretty much perfect for EDC. (that's why I bought it-I wanted a new EDC.)

People suggest you press the light into your leg while turning on Low to suppress the flash if you're in a situation where it's a real problem. I wish they'd fix it too, but I already own one that does it so I make do. Got another on the way, so I guess it's not a show stopper 😉

As far as I know, all the "D" series do it. All mine have.

I wish they didn't, but it's minor enough that all the other pluses of the light make up for it and it's tolerable.

Still... it would be nice if it didn't do it.

The L0D CE and P1D CE don't. But the newer L1D, L2D, and P2D do. I feel the same as you do -- it's annoying but not a show-stopper.

My older L2D-CE (smooth) does not do it AT ALL, but it's very obvious on the L2D-CE (orange peel) that I recently bought for my Dad.

I have an early L2d-ce and it doesn't have a noticeable flash, maybe a very, very slight flash if you were looking for it. But the new L2d rebel100 is like a camera flash going off. I find it slightly annoying but my wife think it is cool.

i bought my L2D CE the 14 May, 2007 and havent remark that in it :grin2:, must be the new ones.🙁

My L2D-CE (Feb.'07 vintage) has the tiny "micro-flash" only when turned on in low, for maybe a tenth of a second.

Not very noticeable. And does not bother me.

My new L1T v2.0 also has the same "micro-flash" also only when turned on in low. About the same tenth of a second. 🙄

Of course, YMMV...

I have the older smooth reflector and the new OP reflector. The L2D-CE OP reflector does flash when switched on but i cant remember with the "old" smooth one(sold to a friend)

But My P3D doesnt flash when switch on.

I just got a P2D and an L2D (both orange peel reflectors) in the mail from lighthound.com a few days ago and they both have a noticeable split-second flash when turned on in low. I actually read about this "problem" before I ordered them but thought: whatever!! These lights are so cool in so many other ways that this tiny little flaw doesn't bother me. If I'm in a situation where the flash will be a problem I'll just hold it against my clothes for a split second. But I'm running mine in turbo mode most of the time now, anyway . These lights are a heck of a lot of bang for the buck, I seem to remember a time when this sort of brightness from an LED would cost at least $150+.

So far I've discovered no problems with these lights, no flickering, the switch feels reliable, the tint is nice and white and the runtimes and regulation are good. There's a bit of battery rattle in the L2D when using primary AA cells (actually varies a bit depending on the make of the cells) but the rattling is not so noticeable when using NiMH. My previous EDC, the aging SL lux jr., sometimes annoyed the hell out of me by audibly rattling in its belt pouch (using AA alkalines) when I walked. The L2D isn't nearly as bad, at least with the Energizer 2650mAh NiMh batts I'm using now.

All in all I'm very satisfied with my purchase. Only time will tell if any significant problems will develop - hopefully none 😛

Fenix is putting out some good values in lights but since they do charge a premium over other Chinese lights, and since there prices are creeping up intot that "quality" light range, they really do need to work out these kinks. If you check out my review of the Fenix L1T 2.0 Rebel, and comments from others, you'll read about dirty "gritty" threads, flecking annodizing, etc. At this price point, Fenix needs to correct these things.

Happily my L1T 2.0, a two mode light adjusted by turning the bezel, has no flashing problem. That would drive me crazy and is a reason why I held off buying the L2D CRee. I thought surely they'd fix in the Rebel version and it sounds much worse now from reading the comments here.

My L2D-CE orange peel has the brief flash, but really it doesn't bother me at all. It is still an excellent deal for a $42 flashlight.

Yep, it's a usual occurance in the L2D-CE.. the flickering is quite annoying for Fenix owners. My friend's Fenix does the same thing and I think seems to be a problem with the power regulation, which is not well implemented. hmmm... 😗
