Does this get too hot?

I was about to buy a Premium Q5 to use as a helmet light. Then I noticed that the vendor recommended only using it in turbo mode for 10 minutes at a time to avoid overheating.

I know this has been a popular bike light on this forum but perhaps that was before the Premium Q5 came out. The Q5 does 180 lumens in turbo mode.

Comments?

The Q5 bin is more efficient. This means it will generate more light and less heat than previous versions.

Conclusion: you shouldn't have to worry about the heat.

The general consensus seems to be that Turbo is OK for extended use unless you're in a worst-case scenario (hot environment, no airflow). Since you want to put it on your bike or helmet, airflow will not be an issue. I use my L2D Q5 in Turbo nearly all the time and haven't had any noticable problems.

Oh, and if I could do it again, I'd get the Smooth reflector for helmet use, not Textured. For a helmet light, I want as much throw as possible, and my textured L2D Q5 is not quite as throwy as I'd like. LightHound has the L2D Q5 Smooth, and Fenix-Store can swap reflectors if you ask.

So to keep it cool I just have to cycle faster. Fine, I am looking for any competitive edge I can get. If I think my helmet will melt if I don't push myself then I can accept that.

You are OK it will be fine. Just take it off turbo if you are not moving for extended periods. I have used mine many times constantly on turbo with no problem at even low speeds.

I may be wrong but the Q5 and the old P4 should produce the same amount of heat on turbo, just that the Q5 is marginally brighter.

The textured and smooth reflectors have identical beams in my two L2D's. Not what I was expecting, but they are the same with mine at least.

I wonder if the new 2AA Oilight would have perceptible improvements in throw. I don't have the money to throw down on one right now... anyone done a comparison?

Ive got 2 l2d q5's on my mountain bike, i mainly have them on high but use turbo often for 30 40 min at a time, no probs at all.:)
