I was wondering is the L4 or Tec 40 brighter? flashlightreviews.com shows L4 at 580 lux and Tec 40 at 1300 lux. if these measurements are accurate, why would someone pay so much more for a light which has a much lower lux? thanks.

I don't have first hand experience with either light but to put it simply (because that's the extent of my knowledge)-
The L4 is a 5W Luxeon LED made by SureFire, The Tec 40 is an incandescent made by Princeton Tec. Both companies make a good light but SF's are metal and more rugged.
The main difference is that the L4 is an LED which will run a long time with out burning out the "bulb" it is also regulated I believe and will thus drain the batteries better, also giving a cleaner whiter light till the end of battery life.
I know you will get more educated answers but that might help.
Oh yes there is also the cool factor in a newer technology /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Lux only shows how bright it is at that particular part of the beam. Even though the L4 has lower lux, I believe it has a wider beam of the same brightness. Plus white colour will give your eyes the appearance of being brighter.

What Nerd said. Did you check the Overall Output vs. Throw (Lux) chart?

http://flashlightreviews.home.att.net/reviews/output_vs_throw.htm

Tec40 Lux: 1300 Overall Output: 2850
SF L4 Lux: 580 Overall Output: 5800

Lux is the measure of brightness at a point the size of a dime (or so) at the exact beam center. It does not take into account how wide the brightest part of the beam is or how much light is output overall. The L4 puts out much more light overall, it just doesn't focus it all into a tight spot - the light is spread out over a larger area.

ohh i c.. btw does the L4 come with the click on switch mechanism like the Z48 or do i have to turn the tail for a constant on?

The L4 comes with the Z57 Click switch TailCap. This can be Locked Out to disable the switch by unscrewing the TailCap so that clicking does not cause the light to come on.

One MAJOR difference in the two lights is:

The Tec40 will Completely out throw the L4.
The L4 doesnt have much throw for its brightness, it is a very smooth wide flood of light.

The Tec40 is alot more focused, and will throw really far.
