L4 versus L2

I know you don't honor what I say but let me try again.

I have an L2 and a U2. I wouldnt think about getting rid of an L4 for the L2. What advantage does the L2 really have, multiple regulated levels. The brightness isn't enough to matter. If you notice over at LED museum, the l2 is 745000mcd vs 700000mcd for the l4. 45000mcd difference isn't that much. I know you think that it is alot but it isn't. He posted the U2 today at over 1800000mcd and my tests show that it is about 25% greater total ouput over the L2. Guess what, even with this difference you won't notice that much of a greater usable distance over the L2

So what make the L2 so hot? the lower regulated level. It is still too bright for my nightly tasks ( the u2 is better but I wouldn't mind a .5lumen low level). Now where the L4 shines is the ability to use the McGizmo device to really get what you will want at the camp ground, about 10lumens or so.

So you don't have a regulated low level, guess what it won't make that big of a difference in runtime plus why would you care since you can us rechargables in the L4 and I can't in the L2!

Of course you could just get a nice Lightwave for camping and never worry about regulation or burn time again. The Lightwave4000 I got a few years ago when they can out still hasn't needed a batt change and i only did so recently just to preempt corrosion.

GL,

Ian,

Why not wait until your borther Tom's (aka Cornkid) L2 arrives, and then compare it side by side against your L4?

That way, you can not only get in person beam comparison's, but also see how you like the feel of the light in your hands.

Just a suggestion.

Hope that helps,
John

So let me get this straight once and finally- the L2 gives off about 100 lumens but for about 50 minutes, while the L4 gives of 65 lumens for about 70 minutes, and after their bright stages both emit useable light for hours?
Thanks.

The L4 was tested in an integrating sphere and produced 81 lumens. See the seventh post in this thread.

I have both the L4 & L2. The L2 is brighter, but I had to do a ceiling bounce test to see the difference. I don't think there would be any noticeable difference in actual use. The L2 more than makes up for the shorter runtime on high by having 8 hours of regulated light on low. IMHO the low beam of the L2 is what makes it so useful, not just the high beam.

I thought i already posted this, but The 81 lumen figure is for the l4, not the l2. Hope that helps!

The L4 tested in an integrating sphere had 81 lumens.

The L2 on high is driven harder than a L4. That is why the L2 on high is brighter than the L4 and that is why the L2 on high has a shorter runtime than the L4.

The L2 probably is 100 lumens or more. The point I was making is that the L4 is probably more than 65 lumens and in use you probably won't notice any difference between the L4 and the L2 on high.

I'm just trying to help you make an informed decision. I think you would be more satisfied with what ever you choose if you make your decision based on other factors than how bright the L4 and L2 are when compared to each other. For example the L4 is smaller and can use a Pila 168S battery while the L2 runs in regulation for eight hours on low.

I did in my first post to this thread. He just missed it.

Tom,

Please let us know when your L2 arrives, and let us know how you like it!

All My Best,
John

well.. i said i was going to post a pic so here it is. sorry that it took so long so here it is anyway. the L2 is on the left and the right is the L4. in person my L2 is brighter and more white while my friends L4 is green. but in the pic the L2 seems dimmer and more green then the L4. and the L2 shows the donut hole more. both beams are pretty much the same size. http://members.shaw.ca/iwonger/DSC01126.JPG

ya,
i just sold my L4, so I will wait to see how Tom's L2 looks so that I can base my decision on whether to buy one from an authentic, credible basis, not just rumor and thoery.
Thanks.
P.S. How far is the L2 back-ordered now; anyone know?

I believe you had a few credibile response from those that have, or have compared the two before.

He probably just got a bad light =\ I dont see how someone would trade an L4 at that much of a loss. Hopefully you get your L2 though. All of us here know that lights are worth more than money /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

It sounds like you're looking for an aleph. You can make them however you want, but they arent cheap. I'm waiting till the new white luxeons come out, so i can get a longbow McCapsule for my eco /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You could wait too- if the white leds are on par with the other new ones, a lux III would knock the socks off of any current surefire, and since the die is smaller, it could be focused with a smaller reflector. I kind of regret buying my l4 before the new luxeons came out. I'd rather have a nextgen lux III than a current lux V.

"P.S. How far is the L2 back-ordered now; anyone know? "

I called Surefire on 29-Mar-05 and was told 3-4 weeks. I got ahold of surefireparts on eBay and have one in transit now.
