I searched, and didnt really find an answer...Anyways...Will an L5 head work O.K. on a 9volt body? I know it will fit physically, but will the higher voltage make it go POOF?

Thanks!

If it's like the L4, according to some earlier threads where L4's were tested on bench supplies, you're asking for "poof". I think you want an L6.

Dano,

The KL5 has a boost driver so with 9 volts, your Vin will be greater than your Vf of the LED and you WILL be in direct drive. There is some power consumed by the circuit and a voltage drop so the DD is not to the extent that it would be if it was true direct drive. Many here have lights that they are driving on 3x123 direct. Is it advisable? I can't imagine the answer would be yes. Is it doable without magic smoke? Yes. Will it cut down on the life of the LED? Certainly in theory.

I don't know if SF has taken a position on this or not? Does the owners manual say anything about a KL5 on a C3? Since the KL5 is currently only available as a component of the L5, it seems that SF has been dodging this bullet so far. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As for the KL4 which seems to be similar to the KL5 its not only the DD of the LED but the circuit will go bad as well - this seems to be the more drastic and much shorter term failure than possibly the DD will ever do to the LED. So if you plan to ONLY drive it with 3x123 or 2xLiIon you can go ahead - but the boost circuit will be dead after it and no way back except to put in a new circuit or get the dead one repaired (LT1872 anyone ?) - don´t ask how I found out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Thx to the gentleman who had that spare circuit for me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
