After a recent experience in which (sadly) I was in the dark without my EDC (It was on my keys in the opposite end of the house) I have decited I need lanyards. A lanyard for my Mag Solitare (Soon to be replaced with an Arc AAA...don't worry) and while I am at it I will make lanyards for my FRS radio.

Now here's the question of the day...what should I make them out of. The popular lanyard materials here seem to be TripTease line and Glow-in-the-dark line. Everything important to me is soon to have Glow stripes (Special thanks to Phred here) so I am leaning towards the TripTease line...

What do you think? I thought I'd consult with everyone before I do this...there are always so many good ideas here I figured I am probably missing out on something

Triptease is my favorite, for sure! The only problem I've ever had, is that every picture of me has this weird halo around my neck. If you are in a flash picture, you'll look like an alien. But it is worth it!

Just don't bother doing it until you have a real flashlight. I mean, being without your Solitiare isn't much different than having it, is it?

Well...compared to the pitiful Glo-In-The-Dark (Hy-phens are-fun) tape sitting on the floor...anything would've been good

I guess there were some lanyard posts out there but I always like the most recent version.

or in other words...I can never find the info I am looking for here until I start a new post on whatever it is I am looking for...I keep having that kind of problem lately, ok ok back to the topic at hand.

***EDIT*** No wait...that post strayed off topic into a post on whipping, splicing, and such, so I guess this post is valid after all

Ryan,

Am I to understand that a bright and obviously intelligent young man such as yourself doesn't have an Arc AAA yet? Are we going to have to take up a collection for you?

I have some experience with lanyards and I'd suggest some 3/4" hemp rope blended with some okum as a lanyard for your current EDC. When you have an Arc AAA in your possesion, we can refine the lanyard a bit.

Ok ok ok point taken. I know my current EDC is...not quite worthy, but I'm working on it

perhaps this topic should be laid to rest for a few weeks when UPS arrives at my door.

Shame on you for not having the Arc yet!!

But it's ok, we all had to start somewhere, and after that.... it's no turning back...

And whenever there's a choice to buy one light or the other, it'll always be "get them both".

Don, in your opinion, how well would a coating of creosote work in protecting and preserving the hemp, and would manila work as well?

Don L,

I think creosote would be an excellent preservative. Perhaps an old garden hose or bike inner tube could then be used to sheath the rope.

I'm a little more up on the synthetics but isn't manila also a hemp? I think manila would be a viable substitute.

.....now, if I could only find my tongue...

Doh! Shows how much I know about non-synthetics. I found my tongue, too, but it was tangled in the lace of my Reeboks...

Anyway now I do want to make some lanyards. I am going to get some triptease line because it looks cool and shiny. I like shiny
grin.gif
anyway I am wondering how to actually go about making a neck lanyard though. Fuse the ends and make it fit over my (big
wink.gif
) head or do some whipping or what?

**EDIT**
Ok I would want to make other types of lanyards too but anyway now I have read the lanyards post from I don't know when and am being swung towards some spectra cord from berkeleypoint...but I donno. Either way I'm still foggy on a few things like--where does one find a fid and that tape??

I like the simple lanyard that comes with the Infinity, especialy because it was free
smile.gif
. But a lanyard for my ArcAAA and my soon to have Ultra would be nice.
I searched for lanyard in General, LED and Cafe and didn't find anything exhaustive but there was a post on a lanyard at Wal-Mart for $1. I'm thinking of the g-i-t-d from Triple Aught. Any thoughts on that? How bright is it?
It sounds like the Trip Tease is strictly reflective, is that right? No G-I-D?

Anyone care to share some how-to instructions for turning Triptease line into a nice around-the-neck lanyard? I can tie a hangman's noose, but that doesn't seem like the right way to go.

saaby - in response to your question about fids and tape - I have used both a plastic coffe stirrer and a stiff piece of solder as fids. Next time I'll probably make one from a coat hanger. Tape - I used good ol' Scotch tape, worked fine.

Bart that was the subject I read...which only confused me more

The triptease is not glow in the dark, correct, but if you happen to loose it in the dark (Assuming thats why you want glow--not just for the nifty factor) you can shine your other light around (You do carry at least 2 right
wink.gif
) and find it easily as it is highly reflective.

I bought a woven nylon lanyard at Ace Hardware. I removed the clip which left a free spinning metal ring. I then attched a small key split ring and attached a Berkley clip to that. I then attached a slit ring to my Arc LS (Arc AAA comes with one) and my knives. It's not high tech but it worksand can be used for other devices. I wanted to get a brake away one but they didn't have one and I needed a lanyard NOW!
