Pardon for my ignorance, I just got the Thor light, on the outside it says it is running on lead acid battery, which sounds similar to a car battery. I am wondering if the batts will leak (like alkaline) if it is not used for a prolong period??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yes, unfortunatly they can leak. Same characteristics as a car battery (or any other SLA for that matter)......

Oops /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Another thing about the Thor that I was not fully informed about. I'm gonna keep my mouth shut.

Anyway, I wasn't totaly wrong, it can leak...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

SLAs rarely leak...i once overcharged one so bad the case walls swelled up but it didnt leak at all.

Clinging to a slight bit of hope.....one in a million is still once (and I'd like to think that they leak more than THAT) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

The gel cells I had leaked similar to alkaline cells... powerdery substance, most likely because I overcharged them but didn't know better at 14.

SLA's are a very mature product, and a very reliable one. People use other batts not because SLA's are leaky and dangerous. SLA's just happen to be big and heavy, is all. Use them without fear according to instructions and specs.

Oh, heck no. I just want to make sure that I wasn't completely wrong. I definitly do NOT want any battery to leak ever under any circumstances /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

well the battery that the thor uses is not the best in quality, you should keep it charged and don't store it discharged. If memory serves they use a CB (china battery)brand battery and I have seen these split open a few times.
Also if overcharged they will vent and dry out. Generaly speaking they are not gell cells but are an absorbed glass matt type /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif The H2SO4 is absorbed in a glass fiber type sponge and because of that, even if the battery splits wide open it does not leak a lot. (in my limited experance)

Optima batteries once did a demo once where a marksman fired a rifle round through one of their AGM batteries. It didn't leak. Obviously a half-baked Chinese no-name AGM wouldn't stand up to that kind of punishment, but the technology in general is much more resiliant than other lead acid battery types.
