I want to know which is the best platform to learn the basics of microcontrollers.

I saw Newbie post regarding the Atmel AVR butterfly platform and for $20 is a killer deal. But also I saw tons of microchip learning kits, and it seems that PICs are more popular.

Questions:

1) What would you choose AVR or PIC ?

2) for AVR butterfly is the kit, but for PIC what would you choose for learning?

I only programmed in Basic some 15/20 years ago so may be I start with basic compilers.

My interest is microcontrolled flashlights (doh! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) and small projects.

Thanks

@PEU,

I've messing around with the K150 from kitsurs for programming free sample PICS from microchip.com

they have the new 10Fxxx uPIC in SOT-23 that's really interesting talk about small. Perfect for AAA apps. hint, hint
