In case anyone's interested, Sharper Image has the Leatherman Pulse on sale for $39.95, minus another $10 that you can get by going to $10 coupon at Sharper Image

Leatherman Pulse

The shipping and tax was a bit high, but I just love my Leatherman Super Tool (hardly ever leaves my side except for going through airport security nowadays), and since this has the locking tools that was missing from the standard Leatherman, and scissors to boot, I just had to spring for it-

I figure it's better than the Wave because I don't need the one handed blade feature (people say it doesn't work too well anyway), having my Benchmade for that purpose.

I'm hoping to lighten my load a bit with this Pulse- now what to do with my two other Super Tools....

“...the Wave... the one handed blade feature (people say it doesn't work too well anyway)”

It depends with whom you speak. It works fine for me and three dozen of my staff. It is not the fastest ‘one-handed’ opener, but it functions like no other multi-tool.

Yes, like everything, it's just a matter of a little practice to get used to it- I tried my friend's Wave, and it does work. It's just that I'm used to the more specialized one-handers, so I shouldn't really compare about its one hand opening with those, because if you really want to have a multitool with one hand blade opening operation, it's the only game in town. What I should have said was, "It's better for MY purposes than the Wave", because I NEED the locking tools, and don't really need the one hand operation.

On the Wave, the screwdrivers don't lock, and that's a feature I personally find essential; more so even than locking blades. I've had too many instances with the std Leatherman when it folded up in an untimely fashion when bearing down on a screw- Ouch! This locking feature may not be needed if you're working with cooperative fasteners, but with rusted on screws you're trying to loosen under less than optimal conditions, it definitely helps-

I have the Juice S2. It's 4.4 oz and seems to do most of the same things as the Pulse. It does not lock, but has a sturdy notch for all the tools. I have used it quite a bit and none of the tools have folded on me yet

. It is a bit smaller though.

The Juice S2, Surefire E2, in a Niteize holster with 2 spare 123's in the holsters pouch and a pair of Setwear gloves attached to the holster comes in at just over a pound.

. I keep my other supertools in my tool bag incase I need any of their features. Every time I lend the Juice to someone I get this "what is this miniature orange thing" look at first, then they use it and realize how sturdy and handy the size really is.

One of my friends at work has the Wave and he seems to open the blade with one hand quite easily.

Hey Guys...

Although the Wave is my favorite tool,, the Pulse will be my next purchase...

I also have an S2 and it is a Great little tool...
I use mine quite a bit...

Got my Leatherman Pulse and it pretty much meets all my needs- the scissors are decently heavy duty, unlike the ones on a SAK, though not Micra duty.
The release mechanism isn't flush with the sides, so it tends to get snagged on my Cordura carrying case if I put it in one way vs. the other. I don't like to use the leather ones supplied, because they sit too high on the belt and aren't as comfortable as the nylon cases.
The release for the lock is a bit harder on the thumbs than I expected, but it's positive locking, and can be operated with one hand if need be.
When using the pliers, the sides of the handles are folded over, unlike my Super Tool, which makes it more comfortable when gripping it tightly.
Looks like I can leave my Super Tool home as a backup now- this'll do the job for my purposes.

Is this substantially lighter or easier to carry than the Wave?

I wouldn't say it's substantially lighter; it is, by a small margin, but it's not like the difference between the Super Tool. It's pretty much the same size as the original Leatherman, except it does have the release lever jutting out a bit on the side, so it sometimes gets snagged a bit on my nylon case. This isn't a problem with the leather case supplied, but I don't like the leather cases as much as the nylon ones, because they're much thicker and jut out above the belt too much; just a pain in the side sometimes..
