I am looking for a LED camp lantern. I was thinking about getting one of those cheap ones from walyworld and moding it with a few LEDs but I know that LEDs are work well for beams but what about area lights. I recall seeing one somwhere on the web but cant seem to find it now. I only got about 10 trillion pages left to search though so if any of you have heard of such a critter and would like to give me the URL I would be estatic.

Any ideas on the mod would be great too.

Havnt tried that one but I am looking for somthing a little more substatial.

Well it's not cheap but you can check these out here: http://theledlight.com/LEDlanterns.html
I have been searching for the same thing myself and considered modding a cheap incandescent Wallyworld lantern. But I haven't gotten to it yet. I have a Zzz...Lite from Technology Associates that I plan on taking camping. It's really not bright enough for a "camping" lantern, but it's just fine to run with to the nearest tree in the middle of the night

The only other thing I've seen on the internet is the Bonfire by CMG and a cheap lantern on ebay with an LED PR2 bulb in it. Neither of those are what I was looking for and doesn't sound like what you are looking for either. If you come up with anything please post it here as I'm still looking for one myself hehe

OK I figured it out. I must have been smokin somthing because I dont think such a critter really exists and it I think it wants to be made so off to walmart tomorrow for supplies.

The 4 cell Coleman that uses the PR bulb, and a variable intensity switch, contains a mirrored top and bottom, along with frosted glass. The mirrors are a nice touch, since the light won't be lost or absorbed and will be reflected out through the globe.

The Energizer Folding LED camp lantern is good to consider.

Torture Zone review

It is compact, very versatile, reasonably bright with VERY long battery life. WalMart sells them for about $9 (hard to go too far wrong for $9!).

It comes with two white LEDs. I've seen a mod posted (darn, I can't find the link!) where blue-green LEDs were installed instead for about double the brightness.

It puts out a nice, disfuse light that is great for nightime walks because it lights up so much of the path and surroundings (little branches hanging at head level, etc.).

We love ours!

If you need something extremely bright, this probably won't do it. But, if a modest area light will meet your needs...give this one a try!
