I have an old 2D maglite and I want to make it into a nice light. I've looked at the ROP build and studied it a good bit but i'm just not sure that it is for me :(. The thought of having to replace burned out bulbs and the fact that I can't run down to the store to get them I have to order them turns me off of the whole ROP mod. I don't think I want to go incan, I think I want to do a LED build. I've seen a couple of posts about people putting p7's and p4's in mags, but I don't know how bright they are. Really I need a good run down on LED's, how much they cost, what bin I want, where to get them, how bright they are, and how many volts they need to be good. I have a couple of instant messaging handles I would love to talk to someone who is knowledgable in LEDs and can steer me in the right direction.

Really what you need to do is do a search for P7 Maglite on CPF and read all the threads. This should give you a pretty good primary understanding of what you need. Then post some questions that you cant find answers too.
There is a wealth of knowledge in the threads here.

I'd be willing to chat via IM. my handles are in my profile info. AIM and Yahoo are the same as my user name.

You should edit your profile and add your IM handles.

smopoim86 and I talked for a good while about flashlights and I believe he has steered me in the right direction! Heres the plan

get these things from kaidomain
1. the p7 emmittor for $27
2. the p7 reflector for $5
3. ucl lens (not because of heat purposes but because my lens and reflector are in really bad shape $5
4. and this driver http://www.kaidomain.com /ProductDetails.aspx?ProductId=1866 $12
5. For a heatsink I will be turning my own out of some spare alum stock on the lathe
6. and for a power source we came up with 9 2/3 NIMH cells pushing 9.6 volts.
7. I need to come up with some adhesive thermal paste not sure what i'm going to do about that. I'm stuck between getting some arctic alumina, and just mixing some of my existing thermal paste I have with some epoxy of some sort....

I will post pics along the way :) and I will try my best to document my build very well.

Despite all the hype about the P7 my votes still go to a tri- or quad-cree…

If you opt for Arctic Alumina, check out PhotonFanatic in the MarketPlace. Best prices I've seen on it.

He also sells SSC P7 emittors for $24.

Free shipping if your are in the US.
