Hi All,

Im searching for a LED flashlight for use while walking outside at night. I've seen quite a few of them out there but I want a few requirements to be met and I was hoping someone on here could recomend something.

Requirements.

1. I do not want to be upgrading something it has to come the way it is from the manufacturer.
2. I'd rather not have to use lithium ion, cr123, or battery packs. I like to have the common batterys like AA, C or D cells.
3. Decent lumens of like 200 ish or more.
4. Good runtime of 2hrs or more.
5. If possible a light that has 2 switch options either on or off... Im not a fan of having a gazillion light settings, blinking, brightness levels etc...

Thanks

There are lots of options. To get started i might suggest taking a look at selfbuilt's 1xAA review and 2AA review

How much were you looking to spend?
I'd suggest a Quark Tactical, which can be programmed to a simple 2 mode light or a Fenix TK20. A romisen RC-N3 II is a great choice if you're on a budget

+1 on the above lights, i own them both (well, since given away the Romisen) but they're great lights.

The TK20 costs more than the Romisen but its worth it, a real tank of a light. The warm tint is so much better for outdoor use IMHO, low and high mode, changed by just untwisting the head slightly (fully tightened for high, loosened slightly for low).

you can get the TK20 from here. click on Fenix lights and take a look, also, use the code "CPF8" when checking out for a discount on your purchases, international shipping is free too.

Look at the 3D Mag Rebel, Cyclops Thor x Sirius, Husky 2D 4W Tactical and Rayovac Sportsman Xtreme 4W 3C..

I'd say go for the Romisen RC-N3 warm white. Good runtime, good output, quality is nice for the price, neutral white LED also gives more color rendering then cool white LEDs. Good place to start.

I just want to point out that 2 hours or more of runtime and 200~ish lumens is not (yet) possible with 2AA batteries... 1 hour plus perhaps a little safety margin is what you can expect. Decreasing the output to somewhere in the 70-100~ish range is still plenty bright and will give you the runtime you're looking for.

Oh, and not all AA batteries are created equal. Regular alkaline batteries are not particular good for this application - they sort of work, but don't like high drain, don't like low temperatures and in particular crap out when you combine high drain at low temperatures. Unless you want to use high-tech cutting edge li-ion batteries, your best choice will be rechargeable low self discharge nimh batteries. Such as sanoy eneloop, or one of the competing brands.

Even though it has more modes than your stated "on/off", I think you should consider the Fenix TK40. It will give you great brightness and long runtime at a 200-lumen level. And if you need it, you can switch it to turbo mode and blow the walking trail away with 500+ lumens.

Buy a couple of packs of decent Nickel Metal Hydride AA batteries (like Sanyo Eneloop or the white top Duracell "precharged") and a decent charger like the Maha MH-C801D.

This will keep you on your budget of $250.
