I have an old metal Eveready Captain 2 D cell flashlight. Can anybody suggest a good LED for this? Or is it not even worth bothering with this?

It is probably worth it if it give life back to the light, and if you can pay a little. The Craftsman drop-in LED is an easy fix. I have one in an old metal AshFlash Stratobeam and it works great.

Wow, I didn't even think of Sears Craftsman. I would like to just buy something locally to avoid the shipping costs. Is a local Menards, Lowes, Home Depot, Gander Mountain, or Wal-Mart likley to have a LED replacement for this as well? I think the original was PR-2. Are CREE replacements easy to find locally or are those going to be mail order?

Is this one worthwhile? Does anybody know which brand this is or who makes it?

It looks like it is in stock at the Mall Of America ("Maul" Of America) store.

If I just go to Wal-Mart, will a drop in for the Mag-Lite 2D work out okay for this?

I'm not sure what the "Old Eveready Captain Flashlight" looks like but if the lamp is held in place by a plastic reflector or a plastic bulb holder theres a tendency for those components to melt if use a LED with too high of a wattage.

Size your selection accordingly, and as stated above, the SMJLED's a pretty good upgrade for any 2 cell alkaline incan light:wave:

JAS,
The Sears Craftsman 1-watt drop-in is made by Dorcy. I paid $14.99 for it at Sears and put it in a yellow-and-black plastic 2AA Rayovac that was $4.97 at WalMart. It has a textured reflector and works great, nice beam. With a smooth reflector, you get all the beam artifacts you'd find in the original incandescent.

An even better deal is to get it direct from Dorcy for $8 with free shipping.

I picked up a couple more from Dorcy Direct and have been putting them in some old flashlights that are old pals that I can't bear to see become obsolete and I'm pleased with the results. Again, the beam looks best with a textured reflector in the host flashlight.

BTW, I think the 1W is about the most you'd want to drop into a flashlight that wasn't designed to remove the heat of an LED. It's a good compromise of brightness and runtime; even Mag felt the need to design a circuit that dims the MagLED drop-in as it gets hot, and that was a Luxeon III, if I recall.

Yes, it is just a plastic reflector.

Eric, thanks for the tip on the $8 LED direct from Dorcy. I think that is the best tip if have heard all day!

Just to post an update. I did try the NiteIze LED upgrade from Wal-Mart, but I returned it because I was pretty underwhelmed. I then ordered the Dorcy 41-1642 1.5 V - 8 Volt 1 Watt LED Module directly from them and I have been pretty satisfied. At $8.00 with free shipping it might be one of the better bargains out there right now. I find myself using the old Eveready Captain a whole lot more now. The Mag Lite 3D that I upgraded to a 3 watt Luxeon is clearly brighter, but I find myself using the shorter, lighter 2 D cell Captain quite often around the house and it is easier to use behind home theater installations, computer towers, etc.

I'll have to give Dorcy a try. I've got an old Captain that I bought eons ago (Late '70's). It has the red pushbutton. I remember reading the card indicating a ten-year warranty, thinking "Wow, that's like forever!". I've got an older 2C Captain and ROV Sportsman it might be fun to pop in also.

I have the 1watt Dorcy in a Kohler/Brightstar 3D flashlight and I can tell you it's the best bang for the buck upgrade out there. Looong runtime too.

I would highly suggest the SMJLED. Cheaper and focuses well in a variety of lights.

See my comparison to the TLE-1F here and here
