I saw a picture of some cube-shaped game console a month or so back (don't know if it was an X-box, a Game Cube, or a Play Station) but it had round controller ports on the front face, and these ports were surrounded by a purple glow.

With 95% certainty, that glow coming from your console is coming from one or more LEDs.
Now that they can be made in every major color of the spectrum, they'll be used more and more regardless of what color is needed.

there is no purple glow on my GameCube front. The glow seems to be coming from an orange LED (hopefully). the light is located at the front of the 8cmMD (8 centimeter MiniDisk) port.

Must have been one of the other game consoles then. I've never seen a Game Cube, or any of the others for that matter, so I can't tell you what is or is not in it as far as the light source goes.

The last game console I've seen or used (played on) was an Atari 2600

and that was back in the late 1970s.

Guess I can't be too helpful here.

An orange colored light that produces little heat could be either an LED or a neon bulb.
If the console plugs directly in the wall with a regular cord, it could be either. If the game cube uses a "wall wart" for power, it would definitely be an LED.

You know the light on the front of the Nintendo GameCube that lights up when the gamecube is on. Is that an LED? I ran mine for 5 hours and the glowing part doesn't seem to be hot.
