Its a term given to those Honda's and Toyota's and other japanese import cars that are usually lowered and tricked out with mods and stuff... usually with stickers on the side of the car denoting the after market parts they have in the car.

apparentely people saw a bunch of asians with these kinds of cars and coined the term rice rocket. kinda weird now that asians aren't the only ones drivin these types of cars..

Did you see the movie fast and the furious? Those are rice rockets. I call em fart-cars... cause thats what they do.

Oh I get it. Asians are rice eaters. Asians drive those cars. So those cars are called Rice Rockets....

I had a big long post about what I thought about this, but I deleted it because it made me sound like an idiot. I wouldn't want to sound like an idiot. No not here on these boards where the only thing we discuss is things that illuminate.

I just emailed you.

I was trying to make people realize that Rice Rocket is a racist slur, but I can see how my last post may seem like one in itself.

So now I will amend my last post.

"Rice Eater" is a racial slur applied to people of Asian background because their diets are made up mostly of rice. Therefore calling a car that a person of Asian background a "Rice Rocket" is a racist slur. Some motorcycles that are made and ridden by people of Asian background have been given the same type of racial slur "Rice Popper."

When I asked "What is a Rice Rocket" I already knew what one was. I was hoping those that used it would realize it was racist and retract their statements.

I desided to delete a long post on racisim in America because I saw it as futile. I realize that no matter what I say to a person it will not change the way they think if they don't want to change. So why try? I would just look like an idiot. So I chose to avoid a flame war on a message board where flame wars are practically non-existant.

It is a derogatory comment, I was going to say something about it, but chickened out because I didn't wanna stir up a debate and such. Thanks for breakin the ice, now I can say what I want to say.

Although I know Craig didn't mean anything by it, its probably just not politcally correct to use that term.

Sorry, I had no idea this was a phrase of hate.

I've heard many people use it to refer to this type of car, including Asians. The term was originally meant to intend that most cars done up like this were Japanese-made (Hondas, Mitsubishis and Nissans are the most commonly modified cars), and had no racist correlation to the actual driver of such a car. How times have changed.

So, what *is* the "politically correct" term for such a car?

I would say, the politically correct term would be "fixed up car."

Being Asian myself, I know a lot of Asians that use the "rice rocket" term. It means a fixed up Japanese car. Some might get offended at the term, others may not...

That said, I have a souped up / fixed up car myself! Just that it's a "sleeper" and no one will know, but I've beaten many Porsches! hahaha....

Seriously, though...I don't drag race, etc. and my car doesn't look "fixed up." I don't approve of that kind of stuff (fast racing, etc.)... I just do the occasional fast start from the Bay Bridge toll booth. That's all...I was never really into the "Fast and Furious" thing...never saw the movie (how was it?)

And darell, if you're reading this, don't worry. My car gets a respectable 30+mpg on the freeway and overall I average ~25mpg. Nothing like your EV, but not bad for a 7+ year old car based on the Civic platform... Yes, it's smog legal, too...so no illegal tuning going on here.

Anyways, this isn't www.vtec.net or www. honda-acura.net, so I'll stop here....before Brock moves this to that forum!

BTW, magazines such as SportCompactCar, Honda Tuning (?), etc. have used the term "rice rocket," etc. Car and Driver has used the term "pocket rocket" to describe small, fast cars.

It all depends on how you use it...and your intent...like I said, some might get offended, others will have no idea that it could be an offending term.

Although it's origins may be a bit dubious, IMHO I don't believe the phrase "rice rocket" is racist. It doesn't seem to be directed at people, but at the automobile itself.

It's background obviously comes from the old term "rice burner" - a derragoratory phrase used in the US in the '70's to denote inexpensive Japanese import cars that were in strong competition with domestically produced autos. The "rice" portion of the phrase referring to the Asian countries indirectly through the fact that they are the largest producers of rice in the world.

As always, it all depends on your point of view....

I always thought that was a car that ran on natural gas!

(Less funny than you may think - NIMO (Niagara Mohawk Power Corp) in upstate NY has a number of cars and trucks that run on natural gas.)

I'm going to throw my $.02 in here too.

I frequent the zx2.com forums as well, and the common term you hear is "Rice-boy" or "Ricer". Technically, yes, this term has some derrogetory roots behind it, mainly referring to the old Hondas and Toyotas of the '70s & '80s (rice burners) due to predjudice feelings towards non-American vehicles.

However, today the term "rice" in reference to autos is most commonly used to describe vehicle modifications done in "bad taste" (since opinions vary so much, there's no standard to judge by) such as 5" exhaust tips that make that lovely <BLAAAAAT!!!> noise, or the gigantic aluminum wings found on a 1996 Honda civic DX. Also, I've noticed that "rice" seems to be a primarily caucasion thing. Most of the people I see of Asian descent have cars that are either stock, or modified in a subtle manner to look normal. (sleeper)

Also, the term rice is commonly branded on cars that are all-show and no-go. You can have a Honda Civic with a 4 ft wing, a 5" exhaust tip, and 10 lbs of vinyl on it go SLOWER than say..... my stock looking Escort.

I guess if the term "Rice" used in this manner offends anyone at all, it shouldn't be used, but I just thought I'd comment on this since it's a regular discussion on my car BBS.
