I'm not sure on when I purchased these, but I'm guessing maybe 2008-2010?
I really wanted to like them, from all the talk about them here
I carried them until I realized how much I hated the UI, and I do mean HATED
I could never get the correct amount of light I needed/wanted, when I needed/wanted it
So, after about 3 months of really, REALLY trying, these got retired, as has any desire to ever purchase another Novatac/HDS/ whatever their call them
I realize many folks here luv them, and I'm glad they are available to them, but for me, they're nothing more than a toy, with a ridiculous UI
I somehow missed this post...I've configured my novas differently...the edc one defaults to about 5ish lumens, with a double click of 40ish lumens, a hold of 250ish lumens, and a triple click of about 0.5 lumens, and has a flush button.
The more "rapid response" nova defaults to 50(or 120 depending)ish lumens, double click to about 5ish lumens, a hold of about 350 lumens, and a triple click of about 0.5 lumen, has a tactical raised button.
My third one has yet to be modded, but I'm likely to try and frankenstein some Anduril 2 build into it.
Granted, the two active Novatacs are modded, the EDC with an older high CRI 3500kish osram square, and the "RR" one with a Nichia 519 A in 4000k, perhaps that might fix the issue? Whatever light I use, I know precisely what lumens I'm expecting to come out of it, and at any given time I'm carrying at least 2 lights for redundancy...
If the real issue is the lack of ease of access to specific modes, I feel you...I typically carry the more tactical one, which defaults to 50 or 120 lumens, simply because if I really need low light, I will push it into my chest, click it on, then double click or triple click accordingly before shining the light on anything.
**incidentally, I'm doing a runtime test with a cr123 on my "edc" one on the 40ish lumen setting as we speak...so far, a little over 4 hours in, and it hasn't dimmed much, if at all. I am also periodically bumping it with a button hold, so maybe thats keeping it from going down too much. It still does go to max with a hold though.
6 hours in and it was still holding at or near 40 lumens, test terminated due to scheduling issues. I will resume the test shortly, taking into account that the cell has "rested"
***Another 2 hours in, and it's holding somewhere around 25 lumens, but bumping it up to max for a second seems to reset it back to 40ish lumens. It's still going. Also, the max is a perceptibly dimmer than on a full cell, but still plenty bright for tac illumination, looks to be about 180ish lumens or so vs the 250-300 it normally is
****10/23/2025 just concluded a back to back runtime test using 920mAh orbtronics, about 3 hours on about 100-130 lumens. Then it tanked to about 8 lumens for a few minutes, i terminated the test, cells were around 2.8V. Right around LVP
