Long post and bit out of the ordinary fellas. if you want to test your light hypothetical knowledge read on. Im looking to get a green LED light for squid fishing.

Squid lights, usually green LED are used to dangle underneath boats or off jetty's to attract baitfish and therefore squids at night. Plenty of such lights on the market. Here is a typical aussie example. https://www.tackleworldtownsville.com.au/perfect-image-underwater-led-squid-light-green
Downsides are they are usually powered with jump lead clamps and a 12v vehicle battery. As I am accessing some remoter areas on foot I am looking for lighter battery options to carry...

Had an idea to get a regular 18650 or similar 1000-2000 Lumen green led flashlight, like one of the manker models, put a nitecore 40mm diffuser cone on it and dangle that in the water.

I figure even IPX8 wont handle 3-6ft of salt water too many times though(?). Opinions?

I also assume bagging it against water ingress would be a very bad idea for overheating? Sea water temperature here is tropical, about 85 degrees for the record...

Maybe a complete fail right off, but thanks for any opinions. Models I had looked at were all high power dedicated green LED's anyway.

Again with a nitecore 40mm diffuser cone attached.

Other option is to find an affordable regular diving light with the diffuser cone attached as white light can still be used but as seen as somewhat less effective..

Do you know what the draw is on that Aussie Squid Light? How many hours or mins do you need it turned on in total?

I would think about making a portable 12 volt power source. 3x21700 and you’re there (or whatever size you can carry). Make up 3 or 4 battery packs and make the best out of it.

There’s going to be a compromise any way you go. I can’t find the current draw specs on any of those bait finder submersible green lights.

I'm sure you can buy a 12v battery pack already made.

I'm a redneck...so I would literally duct tape 3 button-top 21700 batteries together just as if I had a 3x21700 flashlight tube and see how that works out.

Sure but how do I connect it to the clamps? That is the level of non-DIY I am :)

Aloha Mickb, we use these set-ups a lot here in the islands for shore fishing and light diving at night. The Poly bodies are rust proof, provide good grip when submerged and offer an endless option of emitter swaps very quickly.

Get a good dive light with bright white l.e.d. Get a diffuser that fits. Tape over the diffuser with transparent green tape. Gorilla tape the diffuser to the light so it doesn’t come off. Put a strong leash on the light so you don’t lose it.
