Pretty new around here and have been putting togeather a collection of LED lights thinking incandescents were dead when I run across the Pila GL4 with a 550 Lumen output using a Xenon lamp assembly. (this is incandescent isn't it?)

I recently purchased a Tiablo A9S (LED) light with about half the lumen output and thought it was the ultimate thrower but now I am wondeing what else I am missing with incrediblly high output in a medium sized package???????

You can build an ROP that will give you 500+ lumens out the front for under $100 if your comfortable with that.

Good question. I'd guess the answer depends on if you mean 500 lumens out the front or 500 bulb lumens.

Best bang for your bucks: get this, then fit this into it, 630 bulb lumens equates to AT LEAST 400 torch lumens out the lens.

Check out this thread, its got beamshots and comparisons.

Hi Jugg2,

I just spent the last half hour searching for ROP. What does it stand for?

Could you point me to a thread or tutorial about building one? Appreciate your guidance.

ROP Master Thread

ROP stands for "Roar of Pelican". The stock bulb is replaced with a Pelican "Big D" bulb. The master thread contains all the info you need to know. Hope this helps!

BTW who is Veranda?

I had found reference to "Roar of Pelican" but no explanation as to what it meant. I read a lengthly thread with that in the title concerning battery overheating and firing. I believe that thread referred to a Pelican light. I never made the connection to a "Big D" bulb. Thanks.

Veranda..... Beats me.

I thought the usual upgrade for a stock magcharger was a WA 01160. I'm unfamiliar with the Philips 5761. I agree that the stock MC makes more sense than trying to acquire upgrade parts for a regular m*g from all over the place, if you don't have an existing m*g to begin with.

if you want to have your doors blown away, shoot for 1000+ bulb lumens. Don't take little steps as each will disappoint when viewed side by side. Double the lumens only looks like a "notch" brighter in real use. Take what you have, multiply by 3-5 or so, that's your new target.

The ROP and Mag85 mods are in the ~1000+ bulb lumen range when built properly and are very worthwhile endeavors.

If you really just want something easy fast and cheap that makes a ton of lumens, go down and pick up a $40 "thor" style suitcase size rechargeable spotlight from Advance Auto parts.

+1

Incremental increases aren't impressive. Double your output if you want to see a difference.

If you are happy with CLOSE to 500 BULB lumens, i'd get a quad bored 1D here, A WA 01183 here ... and a battery back here

You need a metal reflector and bi-pin socket to make this all work also. Cheapest option would be Kiadomain $25 total for both.

Nice small cool looking package for the output. $39 + 8 + 24 + 25 = $96 and that doesn't include shipping for some of the sources.

It would be a cool little light though. Its exactly what I am contemplating right now.

Fusion_m8 - Appreciate the links. At a little over $50.00 shipped, 600 bulb lumens/400 torch lumens from a medium sized handheld light is impressive. I believe we have a contender. :D

mdocod - The Thor, while it may be impressive in terms of lumen output is way to big and bulky. I'll read up on the ROP and Mag85 mods but I am not yet into modding my lights. I guess I haven't been all that clear about what I am after. medium sized handheld light over 500 lumens and under $100.00.

mdocod & usm0083 - I'll keep in mind that if more light output is wanted I should consider an increase of 2x or more as a minimum. Good to know.

Thanks guys. Keep them coming.

Those are some very coolMaglights. Possibly in the future. Or maybe I'll run across one for sale.

My concern would be how well the stock MC socket/bulb holder stands up under powerful bulbs. IIRC the bi-pin holder of the MC is plastic?

With a standard Mag you could always get a KIU and never worry about the heat.
