Wow, love this forum... I just got here and didn't have any idea there was so much info!!
I'm looking for a small flashlight to go in a small EDC pocket box. It needs to be under 40mm long. Not looking for a throw-away light but something with a bit of quality.
Could be a CR2032 or possibly CR123 battery.
What are your recommendations?
Thank you!

40 mm is a tight constraint. Even my old Fenix UC02 is 42 mm long - similar lights available from many makers. I've sworn off button batteries and coin cells...everything I use every day is rechargeable. Maybe there's a good coin cell light out there, but I want a little more light than a single 5 mm LED can put out with no optics.

If you had a little more room I could recommend a RovyVon A3 which I've been carrying for a couple of years now - it's been reliable, and has sufficient output and endurance for my every day needs. But it's over 60 mm long! Disappears in a pocket, but might not fit your box.

I wouldn't keep an EDC flashlight in a box - it's meant to be used, why add steps to remove and restow in a box? Or maybe this is a +1 backup?

Thanks Bill... Yeah this is a little box that has some minimal things just to get by in an emergency, (flashlight, bandage, screwdriver/blade of some sort- whatever else I can come up with), especially if the person doesn't have any EDC load out. Maybe they will carry this. Just a concept I may put out there.

I went through my "Altoids tin survival kit" phase pretty rapidly. I got as far as fitting a complete 1/4 inch drive socket set with ratchet into a tin. Eventually I decided if I ever found myself going through a mints tin really looking for a ferrorod or fish hooks, I'd have made some really dubious decisions up to that point. Now I just keep a couple of band-aids and a pair of Swiss army knife tweezers in my wallet( and some Aspirin), and an Inca pen/Leatherman Squirt/RovyvonA3 in my pocket. No-one will watch my YouTube video, but I use this stuff every day. But then I'm an old retired dude who thinks a trip to Costco is a day out.

Right there with you! A trip to Costco IS a big day!! Despite the youthful, handsome photo that is my avatar, I'm as old as the hills and twice as dusty. Retired as well.

The little box is for my wife, friends that don't carry ANYTHING, folks like that. I will have a usable paracord lanyard, some sort of multipurpose clip/carabiner etc. Better than nothing. I've designed and am printing the box. Fun little experiment.

I carry a Gerber Suspension multitool on my belt, Wuben C3 in my pocket, Advil in a stainless pill bottle on keychain. I need to remember to replace the bandaids in my wallet! Thanks for the reminder!

Both are a bit bigger than your requirement (~45mm), but what about Lumintop Frog

Or Nitecore Tini

When I design the next version of the box, I'll make sure it can accommodate these!
I had to re-read your first post, because I figured it was a small light to carry in a handbag or purse.
And I was about to tell you that, well, most women I know who carry those things can't find ANYTHING in them, ever.
You could guide a super carrier into one of the tiny bags, and they would never find it. >-<

But when you're printing your own boxes, for pocket carry, that changes things. Nice idea! Just like the Ifixit Minnow.
...And when you mentioned including basic first-aid supplies, that reminds me I don't have such a kit in my winter ready-bag.
I do have several first-aid kits laying around the house, and I really should put one in the bag right now, so thank you for the reminder!

I'm a fan of the TINI that PaladinNo links to above. Small format, wide range of outputs, from 1 lumen up to 500 -- which also means up to 50 hours of light on lowest setting. Good lock-out system (though for non-handy people you might want to put a post-it on the back explaining the button-push for unlocking). Easy recharging with USB-C. Better, it will run while charging, so you can hook it to your power-bank and have 1,000 hours of light. The battery is a 280mah cell, so over twice the capacity of the best 10180 cells.
I have had one riding in my wallet for a few years now, and it has suffered no failures.
