been waiting to try my hand at this from instructables

claims to have the ability to generate 3.3/5V from 1.5V

parts list: (1) MAX1674 (Digi-Key #MAX1674EUA+-ND; $5.06 NOTE: this is a uMax device)

All I need at most is two, but I don't want to buy a boxful of it from places like digi-key, anyone know of a store these can be purchased off of per unit of 10 or less?

you can ask for samples from maxim(the one who makes max1674's).

they give out 2 free samples per device/package type. :)

mm, I'm hoping I don't get complaining emails if I just requested samples and ran with it...aren't these things expensive?

nope, thats some special kind of promoting, perfectly fitting into internet age (but they did it already be4),
and, with some ppl using their ICs, the enterprise gets recognized.
If a hundred "samples" lead to a large scale order, they profit of this way of inventing.

(just wait till You get the parcel, those small esd- and whatever-else-of-abuse-proof boxes are great)

I've never had a problem with samples for inexpensive parts. I have been turned down for dev kits (which can run $50 - $500). I always put "hobby" or "development use" and use 0 for expected volume. Worst case, they say no - usually via email, sometimes when the local distributor's rep calls to ask what you want them for. All you've lost is a few days wait.

Here's a summary: http://ladyada.net/library/samples.html

I like National Semi - samples come within a week, and you get emails at every step along the way.

Also, how are you soldering the umax parts?

BTW - Digikey has a $25 min or they'll charge you $5. You can probably get 5 for $30 shipped, but free is better :)

I have yet to figure out that part
my 25watt weller solder Iron's tip is a mess...I tried tinning it with the tip cleaner sold in radioshack, boy it was crummy

so I loaded up my grinder and literally ground off a layer of metal to make the tip thinner than the existing screwdriver [more like a chisel] tip. but now it doesn't work right, parts of the tip works while other pats doesn't

plus my hand shakes when I solder, that part bothers me.
I suppose I can buy a 8 pin holder....:sigh:
