I'm trying to revive an old spotlight I found this weekend. Nothing special, it's a Lumilite Z-lite. I'm interested in knowing what brands to stick with and where to purchase one. Thanks in advance!!

Could you tell us something about the lantern?

I think I can offer advice, but first I have three questions:

1. What sort of battery are we talking about? Is it the 4F lantern battery, like an Eveready 509 (4 F cells with spiral spring terminals on top), or something else?

2. Could you tell me what bulb the lantern has, or what the current draw is?

3. How much, and how frequently, will the lantern be used?

1. Yes, it is the type which is rectangular in shape and has two spiraling springs on the top.

2. It has the original krypton bulb that came with it. I not sure what the current draw is. I can try to find that out later for you.

3.I plan on using the lantern 3-5 times a month.

Sealed lead acid(SLA) are also available in a 6V battery with spring connectors. They are about 5-6AH.I use them all the time.

Although they are heavier than the SLA, I like the Energizer Alkaline 6V.

Pick up a 4D to lantern battery adapter. Garrity makes one. Use 4D alkaline cells at about one half the cost of an alkaline lantern battery with the bonus of common easy availability.

It's 11Ah, so, assuming the bulb is a KPR113 (a reasonable assumption), you are looking at 11/0.75 or about 14 hours, if used continuously.

My experience with these batteries is they last up to six years with the kind of usage pattern you describe.

If you used it every day, I would +1 the SLA suggestion, and certain usage patterns could also suggest the 509 or 529.

But the 1209 is definitely the one I would choose.

But much will depend on what is on special while you are shopping. Any lantern battery made by Eveready or Duracell will be OK, even cheap Chinese ones are OK - if they feel heavy when you pick them up. They must have F cells inside them, not D, so look for a code "4LR25" on them if you are unsure.

If you see "4LR20", they contain D cells and will have only half the capacity, runtime and even shelf life!

I think you have me sold on the 1209.
