looking for a safe, noncomplicated, reliable 18650 charger...

Different USB plugs will have different amperage outputs. I have one that only supplies 5v @ .5 amp. I have several that supply 5v @ 1 amp. (Most of mine fall into this category)
However, I have one that supplies 5v @ 2.4 amps, one with 5v @ 3amps or 9v @ 2amps. (it would depend on what I plugged into it).

And yes, batteries like to be charged slowly. Extreme temps and fast charge/discharge are the bane of batteries.
Charging to ~80-85% puts less stress on the battery as well as long term storage at around ~40-50%.

I have the xstar VC2SL (newly acquired) and seems to work wonderfully for what I'm doing.
It will charge up to 4.2v -2amps x1, 1amp x2, 0.5amp x2. This is why it needs a good supply outlet of at least 2amps, with 3amps or more being better.
yep, i had a brain fart when i initially read knucklegary's post re- 3a input requirement for that charger hehe...thanks for your input as well...
good to know that yet another similar xtar charger user finds it a solid one to utilize...

That 120 Volt 15 Amp alternating current (AC) receptacle on the wall supplies a converter (block like thing plugged into the receptacle) that makes direct current (DC) ~5 Volts (or more) to supply power to the charger. The charger itself can accept less amperes from the converter but can't get more Amps than the converter is rated.

Hope this helps. Know that your question will very likely help someone else looking into this stuff sometime in the future.
once again, i very much appreciate your helpful input as well...

now, tbh - if someone else in the near future might happen upon this thread while researching a related subject, my 'exhaustive' verbose droning might prove too much to bear reading in its entirety hehe... sadly i'm well aware of my life long affliction of the inability to be concise...
:)

Anything on HKJ's site that he gives positive final thoughts on is safe. Goes for both batteries and chargers.
thank you for the direct link...i very frequently use the 1lumen site for recommendations and i forgot the hkj's website address some time ago... his detailed cpf reviews were always among the most comprehensive ones and a hit back when i frequented cpf on regular basis... he's one of a very few genuine icons in this flashlight realm...
even if about 90% of his technical content went right over my head hehe...

Hopefully another member can confirm your question about the charger you are interested in having the capability to terminate at 50%. I sent that charger with my wife and son. It is not here, and I do not remember the model designation. Seems it is not complicated but I did have to read the directions to choose storage mode.

I am an enthusiast on diysolarforum. There is much discussion on lithium battery safety there. I prefer a fire blanket but if you prefer an ABC fire extinguisher, that is your choice.

Yes Stude, the Xtar 3a adapter is proper, and a goodie.
I bought one separately, cost inexpensive, to have an extra. I like the tiny size, and it does not have those folding prongs. I've had issues before with folding electrical prongs.

You're welcome for my input, and thanks for the cool 36' Stude photo collage. The tail end is as beautiful as front.. Those bullet taillights :buttrock:

i just placed an order on amazon for myself, and on amazon canada for my uncle, for that same xtar vc4sl charger with the qc3.0 adapter that knucklegary linked in his post so it's not really a factor anymore if it does indeed have the 'storage charge' option... i'll find out when it arrives tomorrow [and a day later at my uncle's place in montreal]... if it doesn't i should still be gtg with it as my primary use 18650 charger...
:)

it isn't so much my preference of having the abc extinguisher as my option for a fire emergency event, including a potential spontaneous li-ion batteries combustion, as it is more of what i simply came up with when i planned for this purpose... i don't think i could actually utilize the blanket as quickly and easily during any fire emergency, as i can the extinguisher due to my disability, thus reduced mobility and hands' dexterity... and moreover, i simply didn't even think of a fire blanket as an alternative...

after reading your suggestion, the fire blanket sounds like it possibly might indeed be an even more effective means to extinguish the specific li-ion malfunction based fire but i don't think that i myself could use it as quickly and effectively...
however, given your alt suggestion i'll now have to research the specific nature of the li-ion combustion and fire to ensure that the common abc type of an extinguisher could still indeed be a viable and effective option to put such a fire out...

that diysolarforum is a subset of cpf or another forum?...
i couldn't find anything like this here on cpf and when i googled 'dyisolarforum' there's the 'diy solar power forum' that returned in the search result and its url address is indeed 'dyisolarforum' so this is the one you likely meant...
i'm very much interested in small scale [due to lack of funds for a large scale one] solar power setup as an alternative to a grid based plan and have been for a long time... in fact i purchased the liitokala charger about 4 years ago specifically in order to be able to utilize it with my goalzero small yeti 200 unit and the semi-portable 100w solar panels which i purchased right around the same time... there are now far better and more powerful solar generators available for the same price i paid for that little 200 unit from ecoflow, bluetti, etc and i'm seriously considering buying one of such generator/panel rigs...

anyway, i'll have a look at that forum within the next couple of days and do a search for lithium battery hazards while there...

You're most welcome.
The VC4 Plus does have a 'storage' mode. It also has a 'grade' mode that tests the actual capacity after cycling (charge, discharge, charge)
As well as the ability to 'save' a 0v battery and recharge it. Not sure how well that works, but I understand that if the battery can be saved, it will trickle charge it until it is safe to go into a normal charge rate.

Pretty cool.

great, i actually just placed an order for 2 of those chargers, one using your direct link and another for the same combo on amazon canada... freakin' canadian amazon charged me just over $11 more [$46 and change vs $35 and change] for the same unit, mine will arrive tomorrow and my uncle should get his a day later... thanks man...

yeah, that stude was my favorite of all the rides i ever owned, some simultaneously with it... was quick and fast too and very reliable, sounded badass with the specific period correct exhaust i had on it... i'll see if i can put collage or two [in order not to clutter this thread with separate pics] on my basic ms paint program of other 2-3 rides i had up to recently and post it here today or tomorrow since you appreciate such... i always owned only older classic/muscle/hot rodded wheels, whether 2 or 4 wheeled, throughout my 58 year old lifetime as my daily drivers... i don't care for new stuff and never have done so, especially so with the computer chipped electronic controlled vehicles of recent years... sucks not to be able to enjoy them anymore though, i miss just hopping into my rides and go for extended rides for the sake of just driving...

thanks, that's very comforting to know since i've already ordered the charger about an hour ago, and another one ffor my uncle... eventually i'll probably delve deeper into my skyrc mc3000 charger and try to utilize its many advanced functions but for now it's simply way beyond my capabilities and sheer willingness to do so thus this xtar unit will be my new go to charger for a while...

We can use more hot rods over on Cars, Man (-;

i actually made 2 posts back in 2012 on - i think - another car based cpf thread with pics of some of my rides...
back then one couldn'tpost directly via cpf and the pics had to be on a photo storage based website like the imageshack... i've since deleted my account on imageshack long ago so the pics no longer display in my posts...
here's a link to that cpf page, for my 2 posts [#550 and #552]:

you'll have to scroll down more than halfway down the page... this was when i had my original pf account under 'ligaf' user name but mr ed one of the admins merged my new account with the old one yesterday so i was able to find this in my profile...

i'm going to try and hopefully get some sleep now so i'll try and make a couple collages of my other 2 or 3 rides sometime tonight or tomorrow morning and post it here...

and maybe i'll post some more pics in that other thread you linked as well...
:)

here's a couple more pics of my stude, the 'lazy s' license plate was originally denied by the nj dmv as inappropriate but i meant it as a double entendre so to speak and really wanted it... so i showed them proof that the 'lazy s; is the actual name of the studebaker 's' red white and blue logo [factual truth] which the studebaker co began to use in early 50s and they approved it hehe...

Important thing about fire blanket is complete coverage; no openings at all.

Maybe you have a video of your Studebaker? Post it in the Cars, Man thread? You can post it directly if the video is short.

all right...so i made a couple of quick collages on ms paint with 3 of my other rides which i owned between 2004-2022...

this was a hopped up '68 olds cutlass which was my true daily driver from february 2004 until september 2011 when i sold it... it had a swapped in performance built, bored out 455ci crate engine [true displacement was close to 470ci after it was rebuilt and on an engine dyno it was clocked at right around 425hp and over 550 ft/lbs torque... it ran a 1/4 under 13 seconds with street tires and a LOT of squirrely traction, kind of scary trying to keep it in a straight line...it chirped the tires in all 3 gears...
it had a th350h rebuilt tranny with a shift kit, modified 10 bolt rear end [with 3.73 gears] but with an eaton posi 8.5" unit which made the rear essentially as strong as a 12 bolt...

it was a true blast to daily drive this but it was quite painful at the gas pump and a very frequent pain because i'd only get around 5-6 mpg on premium... i could get up to 8 mpg if i'd really baby it bit i almost never did as it was so much fun to keep the loud pedal close to the floorboard all of the time...

i horizontally flipped the bottom right photo 180degrees for a more symmetrical overall appearance...

here's my next ride which i purchased in september 2011 right after i sold my '68 cutlass...

it was a radical kustom in the style of early '60s traditional kustoms [the spelling of custom with a 'k' is intentional for traditional '50s-'60s styled rides]...
it was a true masterpiece, with full - several pages long/multiple photos - features in 4 custom/hot rodding magazines, 3 of those still with the previous owner and one feature done while i owned it...

the custom modifications were too numerous to list and all built/painted by a hall of fame custom builder for his friend and 'beatniks' car club member, himself a well known graphic and tattoo artist on the kustom scene...

the car had just about its entire body modified in every aspect for much better proportions yet done so well it fooled all but other expert builders in how well and subtly it was performed...
the drivetrain was from a restored '67 for mustang [289ci mill, c4 tranny and 9" rear with mild gearing for effortless highway cruising] rebuilt but not radically hopped up, true to its kustom pedigree...
it really had way too many mods to list here...
it took first place in its class [radical kustom] at the 2010 famous 'grand national roadster show' right after it was built...

unfortunately a tour bus plowed into me as i was parked in it in the madison square garden vicinity in nyc in the beginning of december 2011, so very soon after i purchased it, and completely demolished this ride...
instead of salvaging it and collecting the insurance i opted to have it completely rebuilt by the original builder but with hindsight it was a bad move on my part because instead of 6 months to a year he promised me that this would take, it took him 3.5 years and meanwhile my health and overall physical condition had deteriorated significantly as i had no daily driver [except for my '36 stude which was not a set of wheels i could practically drive on daily basis] through out all that time and was thus pretty much grounded at my apartment for most of it...
my auto insurance company pay out was tied up with the builder and although i did receive some money from the accident by suing the tour bus co, i didn't get it until 2014 so i couldn't purchase another daily driver...

by the time i finally got it back i was unable any longer to perform a wheelchair transfer into/out of it without help... thus it was no longer a viable daily driver for me, i sold it around 2016, along with my '36 stude [which i owned since '96 so had it for 20 years short of 3 months or so] and began to look for another set of cool wheels as a semi-daily driver...

that turned out to be a pristine, factory stock '69 oldsmobile 442...

i'm posting a collage of a few pics of the fairlane which i made in 2016 as a for sale flyer which i printed and posted at
my 60 fairlane 4 sale ad reradiused flared wheelwells.jpg
several local businesses, i've crossed out my contact info obviously...

@36stude :

You're making me a little nostalgic, man. In my close family was my somewhat rare Dart GTS 340, my Mom's 396 Chevelle, and my sister & BIL's Charger RT 440 - all 1968. Between us we probably couldn't manage 30 MPG total, but the decimal point in gas prices was over a place from what it is today, and none of us really cared. Cheap thrills if ya ask me (or you, I'm sure;-). I guess '68/69 were the 'sweet spot' years of the era for me.

now, rather than go through the bunch of pics of my most recent ride, the '69 442 which i purchased in the early 2017, and choose just 3-4, i'm instead posting a link to my for sale video clip ad from 2022 [i sold it in may 2022] which i posted on my youtube profile in april '22 for more exposure... it's a compilation of a bunch of pics taken by my photographer/videographer pal and a brief video clip in the middle of it...
i've added some stock, royalty free tunes from yt for a proper vibe of this ride...

that ride was the nicest set of wheels i ever owned, pretty much factory stock with engine/tranny never out of that car with around 117k original miles, only the ignition was changed to hei for better reliability and it had 1 repaint using the original factory lacquer in early '80s... oh, and a partial re-upholstery done in early '90s...

i didn't have the stones to truly daily drive it because it was so pristine so i drove it mainly during nice weather and not very frequently during winters because of the salt on the roads...however, due to my rapidly deteriorating health right around 2020 i really didn't have much of a choice and was increasingly grounded in bed as a result...

in 2022 i finally decided that instead of letting this ride gradually deteriorate inside my tent-garage at my mom's place the next township over [i live in an apartment with public parking only] and allow rust to set in eventually from an ever increasing lack of regular use, it's far better to sell it and recoup what i've paid for it...
if the classics/old cars are not driven on frequent, regular basis they begin to deteriorate mechanically and cosmetically quite rapidly...
i got almost what i paid for it myself and should've waited another year because if i did so i would've made a tidy profit of several k...

i'm now grounded in bed about 98% of the time so i can't really drive anymore anyway, it was a correct decision but... i still miss driving...

hopefully the pics are to your liking knucklegary, et alia...
:)

yeah, those are some very cool rides your family had...
one can't calculate true fun in miles per gallon, even at today's prices hehe...
when i'd drive any of my rides - whether to a store, a bar, to a local lake/park, nyc, a show, a hospital, or just to take an extended drive with no destination in mind - it was better than drugs or alcohol as far as stress release goes and i'd even forget my severe neuropathic pain which i live with as of over 34 years now...

Have you tried using the Bluetooth App with the MC3000. It makes everything super easy. Once setup you can save the various "program" with names for future use. Then it is a few taps to start charging. My MC3000 is my daily driver. There are quite literally 9 other charges on the bench (more in boxes close by). The MC3000 is the go to... and is still going strong after more than 10 years. I have junked several chargers of other brands along the way.
