Hi folks,

I'm back here after a long absence (couple of years maybe?). I have a collection of more than 100 lights, but I need something that I don't have. I was wondering if you could help out, since I don't know what's current anymore.

I need a light that will light up my camp site and also serve as a backup to my headlamp. Here are my specs (and you let me know if this thing exists):

1. CR123 or AA
2. Small as possible
3. 100 lumens or more
4. Several brightness settings (maybe 3-4) or continuously variable.
5. Slow strobe (blink) feature to use when I leave the tent at night, so that I can spot it from far away. Doesn't need to have SOS and a bunch of blinking settings, but it's ok if it does.
6. Some kind of attachment like the Inova Flashlight Signal Cone that makes it behave like a lantern.
7. Price less than $200 (hopefully closer to $100).

Maybe an Olight M20 R5? It's a little big, but it's the closest I could get to. By the way, I was left at R2. When did the R5 come out? I guess I'd better go do some reading and sell some lights to get some new ones...

Well, thanks for any suggestions.

George.

Thanks Jash! That definitely looks great. The only thing I don't see is a way to flood it to make it behave like a lantern as per my requirement #6. I need this feature so that I can spot it easily from any angle when I'm away from the tent and to also flood the campsite when I'm around. I guess I could make some kind of diffuser like this?

I was thinking Quark Mini, but there's no diffuser cone for it.

Right. The diffuser is kind of a must. This thing looks good regardless, though. Might pick one of those up as well for a headlamp. Looks like the size of my Zebralight H30. Is the R5 the latest and greatest? I need to read up a bit. Do you guys know of a thread with kind of a summary of what's going on in the LED world in the last couple of years? Or maybe the most recent trends?

I have an old hds that fits your requirements. I use a surefire beam shaper for flood and put it on the switch end for tailstanding. for using it as a lantern I found a bayer asprin bottle that fits on the end and provides a nice warm light. I enjoyed looking around the house for the perfect lantern head.

Yes, Cree XP-G R5 is currently the latest and greatest in a form factor suitable for pocketable flashlights. S2 bin is on the horizon, but who knows "when".
