Howdy, as the title says I'm looking for a charger that knows what it's doing!

I'm in the UK so it has to be available and usable here.

I need it for AA, AAA, 9V and potentially D cell too, Ni-mh.

I want one that knows when a cell is charged and stops charging, is that too much to ask? :)

Ansmann energy 8 and 16 should be suitable for your needs. If you want more advanced features Ansmann has XC3000 but its targeted for professional users and therefore in different price range.

Thanks, I'll look them up.

I don't mind spending a bit to get a decent one but obviously, no need to go mad!

Any other recommendations chaps?

i bought smart charger from battery space, for 4,8-14,4v, i charge all my nicd\nimh packs, never had any problems with it, it charges AA,D,C,subC,4\5subC. i would highly recommend it, it was not expensive either, $25 iirc.
but it has no displays, no different modes...ect, just 1 plug, and 1 status light, very easy to use.

It's difficult to get all of AA, AAA, C, D and PP3 all in one charger. However, note that 9 V NiMH is not a good option -- it has low capacity and has six cells in series internally, which will soon get out of balance and lead to early failure of the battery. That leaves you with just AA, AAA, C and D. Since you said D was only a possible requirement you have just AA and AAA, giving you more choices.

If there is an IKEA near you this might be an option:

(I have not tested it, but the features are sound for a basic smart charger.)

If you really want to charge D size, you might consider the Maha C808M, but it isn't cheap and you will likely have to order it online.

Ordering online is no prob, and if it means I don't have to go to Ikea again soon, that's all good!

The 9v is only for one thing and I can give it a miss if needs be. I mostly use AA and AAA and could perhaps use those holders which turn AA in to D cells for my maglite etc? More to think about now!

I'll look up the others, thanks again

Sometimes LIDL has some dead cheap and decent chargers that are capable of charging from AAA to D and 9v cells. The problem is "sometimes" can mean once in a year.

It seems they are pretty decent and some people think they are rebranded Annsman.

what do you know...tommorrow the shops here in Greece will ahve a special...

A multibattery charger with refresh and other charging modes...at 15 euros (and it does have a -dV cutoff)
