Looking for efficient diffuser

I want to make some overhead fixed indoor lights using a single Cree or SSC. I'm thinking that I'll make a small enclosure with some type of diffuser on it so that it doesn't leave spots in your vision if you glance up at it. I'd like to get as much light transmission as possible, just more spread out. Any ideas?

For fixed lights you can get big sheets of clear or translucent diffuser from your local Lowes/Home Depot etc. They are made for ceiling flouresents. I warn you - this stuff is very brittle and hard to cut without cracking.
