Hello Doron,

Welcome to CPF.

I do not believe there are any HID weapon light systems. The problem seems to be the HID lamp. Under severe impact, it tends to extinguish. HID systems for bicycles have noted that under severe conditions, their lights will flicker and sometimes go out.

I have not observed the going out part, but have seen my HID lights flicker when accidently bumped.

If you visit www.surefire.com you will find a good collection of lights to look at that can be mounted on weapons.

From what I have read, minature and HID aren't in the same sentence. Don't think HID is a design that is well adapted to rugged environments, like the pounding it would take from recoil. Also, I think most HID's that perform well have larger reflectors due to the light source size.

I mounted my X990 on my bicycle and it flickers when bumps are hit. I am told this is not good for ballast at all. They however are selling plenty of bikelights for mounting on helmets with remote water bottle batteries. Some systems have 2 welch allen reflector type bulbs rated around 500 lumens each in very small housings. Check Performance Bicycling magazine. Very Slick- Darn X990 was almost too bright as well (And heavy)- ruins night vision....
Good luck. These new bike lights are so small easily could be made into flash (gun) light with correct battery. Systems selling for around $300 to $400 USD. HID bulbs run very hot so I wonder if they COULD possibly take the shock of gun recoil- I doubt it- but they work good mounted on top of your head...

An Arc lamp is the Spark that takes away the Dark--HID smokes LED!

I think another issue here is that HID light usually takes 10-15 sec. before it is fully stablize and bright.

To use that on a gun, could mean life or death, especially if you need instant light at a flick of a button. Also, if you turn it off, it usually requires a cool down period, before you can turn it back on again. This helps prolong the life of the bulb.

I say just stick with surefire for guns. Best flashlights, hands down for weapons.

Also the 10-15 seconds start up time is my experience with my bike HID light. On my car, the startup time is about 2-3 seconds. Which I think is still too slow for a weapon light.
