Hi,
i'm going to visit a friend in africa in the end of october and was thinking about bringing him 2 lights as a gift for him and his wife.
Now, i would like to bring something useful which is not draining batteries excessively but also doesn't just dimly glow...I was also thinking about an akoray k-106, but with 2xAA you would have more runtime...i also had a look for mx power, but there is also no real multi-mode light available.
Earlier this year i already sold 2 romisen rc-n3 II from shiningbeam, but the 2-modes are not really that far away, so i don't consider this option...

what would you recommend? I'm just waiting for the eagletac p100a2 to arrive as a gift for my brother going to australia in a month, maybe it is so good, that i just get two of these, even if it's more expensive..but you never know what it's good for ;)

quark AA-2 tactical. two programable modes, you can set them to whatever you like from the 8 possible settings. after modes are set, just tighten or loosen bezel to change modes.

surefire E2L AA is 2 output, i dont have any experience with this light.

fenix tk20 is another 2-mode light. no experience with it either, but many owners seem to love it.

i can comfirm on the romisen light, the 2 modes on it arent much of a difference.

TK20 is a great light i EDC one myself and love it they cost about $53 from 4sevens.

A cheaper but good quality option can be found at shiningbeam.com Romisen RC-N3 II Cree Q5 2-Mode LED Flashlight for $23.25. I have 11 of them sofar mostly as part of my home/car emergency kits.

I'd second the Romisen RC-N3 2 mode but .....

The modes are too close so you really don't see much difference. This is a long standing issue w/ the N3 and most of the multi-mode Romisen lights.

OTOH, the N3 is tough and reliable and inexpensive.....

check out fellow CFPer ShiningBeams site. Ryan stocks numerous Romisen lights most of which are "Shining Beam" special versions w/ better emitters. and +2 on his customer service

Although modes on the RC-N3 do not differ much in brightness, is the current draw perhaps much less on the "low" setting? This might be a real plus for runtime, even though the close modes make it effectively a 1-mode light.

Never tested the low mode but the one I had would run 2.5hrs on high using alkaline cells so pretty good run time anyway.

The Eagletac P100A2 has 8 Hours on low and 1.4 on high...so the romisen rc-n3 II is not an option...even if its much more expensive, but that romisen just doens't make sense to me ;)

Hmmm this makes no sense.

If I remember correctly it is approximately half the output on low. That may have been just this Q5 version though. It was in this thread.

The fenix E21 which is coming out soon or the LD25 may be good choices.

I have the P100A2 and P10A2, and both are excellent choices, althought the P100A2 is a lot cheaper, there is very little difference between them other tham a bit more throw with the P100A2 and slightly more flood with the P10A2,

the P100A2 does not tail stand but the tail stand on the P10A2 digs into your finger unless you hod it just so.

I have had several romissens and the Eagletac is streets ahead, and even the low is a good output and long run time

I own two 2-mode 2xAA lights: Eagletac P20A2 in neutral white (not the Mark II) and Fenix TK20. Each is outstanding. With its clip removed, the EagleTac begs to be carried in a pocket. It also has the best regulation of all my lights. I suggest the newer Mark II, whose strobe can be disabled. And only in neutral white; its superior color rendering will make your friends feel special.

The Fenix offers accessory cones (white and orange) and robust quality that make it suitable to keep in a vehicle. The Fenix's color rendering outdoors is a thing of joy; it was my first serious LED light and it closed the book on my love affair with incans.

Have you looked at the ICON Rogue 2? They can be had around $30-40.

I send this one and the styling is one of the best. If you have a microcenter around you, they are 25 bucks and they are the best bang for the buck.

Also radioshack has their 1aa icons on sale and if you use the radioshack 10off 40bucks you can get two of them for 15 each. They all come with a lanyard and a great 2 mode hi-lo with a foward clicky.

A great light with withoutput and styling as it doesnt look like anything else out there. All of the surefires and eagletacs all look too similar in their 2aa line. Again its my opinion.

Hope this helps.
