If you can use metal that isn't cosmetically perfect, and you can work with pieces 48" or shorter, here's a store to check out:

http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Discount-Steel-Online-Metal-Store

I just bought some aluminum pipe, flat & rectangle, and prices are about half of that at the online suppliers I normally use. On one item, 3" Sch 40 aluminum pipe, Metals Depot price was $42, Discount Steel was $19.

The company is a cut to length metals supplier & they have a fabrication shop, so they end up with (literally) tons of drops. Because of that, some of the lengths are uneven, like my 42" flat bar, or the 34.75" pipe. Since I'll be cutting all of it into shorter lengths, it made no difference to me.

They currently have a 20% discount on all eBay items, BUT the eBay invoice does not reflect either the sale discount or combined shipping. They will send a PayPal money request that shows the correct total. There's also a toll free number & friendly people to talk with if there's a question.

Thanks Barry.

I usually go to a local (30 miles away) supplier, but then it's a matter of browsing through the shelves of their warehouse and ending up with an extra 20 pounds or so of material I may mot use for a year or 10.

Daniel,

There's one cut-to-length supplier about 15 miles away, but his aluminum prices are full retail, plus a per cut charge. I can piggyback anything needed with a local fab shop, but that means 12' aluminum or 20' steel, full sticks. So my small orders normally go to Metals Depot or Online Metals ... until today :D
