Ok, 'low cost HID' is a contradiction in terms, but is there such a thing as a relatively inexpensive bare-bones HID spotlight? Application would be lighting things up just for the hell of it. Throw favored above overall output.

The Havis-Shield hand held corded is the least expensive factory HID I know of. $179.00 in a group buy a month or so back, been hearing about $250.00 lately.

Modding a spotlight to HID is the least expensive way I know of getting what you're asking for.

HID Vs Halogen gives you an example of the problem you face. With the possible exception of the HID- Thor Mod it is not hard to find a (much) cheaper light that will out throw a HID

MP,

The Blitz reflector is not cheap and I don't know of any other halogen "cheaper light that will out throw a HID".

The best cost/benefit ratio light is the Thor HID with a used HID headlight/headlamp assembly from ebay. It will beat any cheap halogen and would likely be pretty close to the halogen Blitz. Now, the HID Blitz would out throw the Thor, since the Blitz has a very very nice reflector.

the 15 mcp thor modded to hid should out blitz the blitz
11 inch reflector is bigger than the blitz reflector.

Well, since no one has proved which actually throws further, and they should both show about the same performance because of the similar reflectors, we don't actually know if the Thor or the Blitz throws further. But, then you have to count that the Blitz is 50watts, where as, I think you markdi, are the only one with a 50w HID Thor at this time. So most others have 35watters in their Thors which I definitly don't think throws as far as the Blitz....

We just need proof that we don't have.

Anyway, the modded Thor is as cheap and easy as it's gonna get. The Havis-Shields is nice but it doesn't posses as much throw.

You might be surprised at how far an incandescent spotlight can throw. I'm a diehard HID fan, but about 6 years ago I bought a used Coleman spotlight for 15 bucks that uses a 100 watt H1 bulb, similar in size and form to the Collins Dynamics Magnum and the 240 Blitz, and powering it with a 14.4 volt battery pack it could easily out throw the X990 and Kumkang. But I still love my HID lights. Larry.

I do not have a 50 watt thor yet.

I want to put my 50 watt dl50 in a 15 mcp thor with the 11 inch reflector but I am starting to think a 15 mcp thor will never become available for me to purchase any time soon.

so I may go buy a 10 mcp thor from costco and put my dl50 in it.

or save my dollars and get a blitz but they have a 9.5 inch reflector and the 15 mcp thor has a 11 inch reflector.

and a blitz costs a small fortune.

The light itself in a corded version is only about $130.00.
Note they have 20, 30, 50, 75 and 100 watt bulbs, in horozontal and vertical filaments
The 50, 75, and 100 are "longlife" and are dimmer
The 100 watt vertical filament is the most powerful showing a million CP

The local direct Rep for Havis Shields sold me my HID for under $200 and did not charge for shipping.
