Low Self-Discharge D cells?

I'd like to put together a 3 or 4 D Mag with an LED drop-in. Intended for emergency use as a light and club. But I can't find any lithium or LSD cells in D size. Any suggestions? Perhaps stuff multiple AAs in it?

6 Accupower LSD batteries and the Maha CM-808M charger all from Thomas Distributing. Works beautifully in my triple drop in from Malkoff.

Gah.. I nearly fainted at the price!

$90 charger + $24 x 2 batteries = $138 USD or about ~$166ish CDN

You could buy a lot of alkaline D cells for that. If you are not going to use it a lot them there is little value in rechargeable. They will fail eventually even with little use. Go with alkalines.

Yeah, if you're not going to use it much don't spend a lot of money on Accupower D's and a charger.

I have them, but I use that light, a Seoul P7 DD off 3 D's, every single day.

Most of my lights have alkalines in them. And most of them get changed out in June every year, still have as much as half or even more life, because it's the start of hurricane season. I only have a couple of lights I use regularly, and even with LSDs they will generally self duidcharge before they are run down. Energizer Lithium primaries in the Mini-Mag / nite-eyes in the cars.

Several years ago, 1995, I was working where I used a 3D Mag and a Mini every day at work. NiMHs weren't available but I used NiCds and charged daily. But for normal people, if you can call a flashaholic "normal", alkalines, at least IMNSHO, are really the way to go. Buy in bulk at places like Sam's or Costco and they're pretty cheap. I save my rechargeables for photo and audio equipment.

And CR123s for one EDC Coleman flashlight that gets a new battery annually and my Streamlight TLR2 Tactical Light/Laser on my Glock, also changed out annually. Surefire brand only.

I keep a stock of them in my freezer (I know some say referigerator only but I have done this for years with great success) and they seem to be good for a couple of years after I take them out. But generally, I swap them all out in June in preparation for hurricane season. All fresh batteries, no matter how much or how little I have used them. But that's just me.

I have 4 lithium primary D-Cells that have a 10+year shelf life. The one thing to consider though is that they are 3.0V, not 1.5V so if the LED module can handle 12V you can use them in a 4 cell light, or you can use 2 in a 2-cell and have 2 spares. I was going to use them in a 4D with a Terralux drop-in (I think the TLE-6EX) but I gave light away and still have the unused batteries. I'm selling them on CPFM if you are interested.

+1 I would stick with alkalines. IMO it's not worth spending that much money for this purpose.

Kind regards,
Joris

I thought one reason alkaline cells were not suited for outdoor winter use is because below about 20 degrees F they can freeze and burst.
