Title says it all, I am looking to buy another light and want something that has 2 output levels and is relatively small, these two lights that I ran across fit the niche, but which one would you the user recommend?

The MIII is built like a tank. I wouldn't call it relatively small unless you're talking about camparing it to a 6P or similar.
It is a great kit with several battery, switch and head options. It can actually do 3 levels depending on the switch installed. Brightness is good but not blazing. The beam is nice for a Cree but not as wide a hotspot as the LM31.
I have one of each as well as the LM33. They're all great lights and the MIII can be set up lots of different ways.
I think it boils down to the size, weight and money you want to spend. The MIII kit is a great buy given how the kit can be configured, but the LM31 is certainly the smaller and lighter of the two lights and also a good price given the consistency of LM lights.

I also have both lights. I'll second RebelXTNC's comments. The LM31 is a great all-around utility light, I gave away several to family members at Christmas. The MIII is neat since it can be configured different ways and is actually a 3 level light-- but at a higher cost than the LM31. Note the MIII is larger, if you are looking for a smaller light to keep in your pocket the LM31 might be better- although I do still carry the MIII in my pocket.

If you simply want a light to carry around LM31 is the natural choice.

You fully enjoy M3 only when you modify its configuration often, changing battery type or putting on the turbo head.

Besides IMHO for general use SSC P4 is more suitable than CREE because of its smoother beam.

BTW I have also LM33 and tend to EDC it rather than LM31 because of its significantly smaller size. Have a look at it because if you use it only occasionally the higher cost of the battery is not so important.

After weeks of thoughtful consideration and hand-wringing, i finally ordered a LM31 from batteryjunction a day or three ago. From everything i've been able to gather, this is sure to be a yet another great new illumination toy to display to my already bewildered family and freinds.

Better get another one right away 'cause you're stuck on the fateful #13.
Get the brother LM33 for a matched pair. CPF motto is "you're supposed to buy both."

Cheers, marlite

Hi I love this one is always in my pocket not to big.I use 14500 unprotected when I want more lux in High mode and regular AA to have a more long time in Low mode.

Gava

I have decided on the LM31 for the time being. Any mods and or homemade improvements for the light available?

Common Energizers are all you'll ever need, and in a pinch you can pick them up in any Kwiki-mart. :twothumbs

The two things that I did to my LM31 were install the GITD shorter tailcap. This allows for tail-standing and you can find the flashlight in the dark for a short time after it's been exposed to light. This also makes it a little harder to switch since the rubber boot is slightly recessed.
Search for older threads about how to remove the switch without damaging the springy side contacts.
I also added a small split-ring, I don't remember the size but it's an Eagle Claw brand (fishing tackle). These are very strong and sharp, if you can find an easier one to install that is the right size to fit the hole and groove to lay flat when tailstanding I would do that. You must use great care to avoid scratching the finish of the light. The LM31 and 33 finishes look nice, but aren't super hard. I haven't installed a ring on my LM33 because the wall thickness at the lanyard holes is much thicker than the LM31.
Using a ring allows easy installation of a generic neck lanyard rather than the very thin wrist lanyards that come with the lights. It also provides a small amount of anti-roll.

I think I am running mine on Rechargeables. This light is for medium throws right? (last I read I heard it isn't too floody or too throwy)

The Terralux LightStar3 is a decent item. Long runtimes, common battery type and easy to use. It's no LumaPower but it' a great gift light for non-flashaholics.

i was leaning towards the lm31 since i want a small single battery light i can put on my keys.

but the deal breaker for this light was that i have to click twice to get to the level ill probably use the most.

i almost got the olight t15 but it seems it is all spot and little spill.

i wanted the lm31 cause it had good spill.

is there something that suits what i need for 50 bucks or less?

Get the T15 with a Q5 - you will not be disappointed.

Whoa... this thing is bright. Did I mention it runs for a long time? I would be happy to try the M3 Trans former or (if LM does this) a turbo head for the LM31.
