Hi Folks,

So many new LED's in the offing lately, hard to keep up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have ordered a bunch of samples, especially of the ones that offer a warm white version for an upcoming outdoor lighting project and while I have no progress on that front to really report yet, I can at least post some pictures of the various LED's to compare some of the interesting features.

from left to right: Luxeon warm white star-o, luxeon high dome, luxeon side emitter, IO Moon (Nichia Jupiter LED), UFO, and finally a 3 watt luxeon.

to get some idea of size and scale here's some on my palm

interesting to note also is the different take on thermal management taken by luxeon vs the leddynamic folks and their mounting of the nichia jupiter) here you can see the 3 watt luxeon which has an even thicker and heavier board compared edge on against the IO Moon which has the thinnest board I've ever seen.

in my very informal testing here, the luxeons seem to generate more heat than the nichia though.

The luxeon warm white with optics is a thing of beauty. Color really looks like a halogen bulb, but it messes with your perceptions because it's not really bright enough to have that color. The IO Moon warm white is nice too but even at the smaller beam diversion version that I ordered it has a ton of side spill without any optics. The color varies quite a bit from the edge to the center of the beam, to warm to cool and back again, but this disappears when putting it through an optic. The UFO's are interesting. They aren't warm white, but I ordered them just cause I was on a roll /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif The beam on these is very collimated. It really reminds me of my inova lights. But the quality seems pretty good, very even beam. I dont think that at the same power level that it's as bright as the luxeon, but given how the beams are so different it's hard to tell for sure. The Luxeon Star-O's do not have the traditional nx-05 optics that I expect, they are really very similar to the fraen low profile that I have here. results in a very nice beam.

The IO Moon i ordered from Led Supply

the UFO Led's (and the luxeon warm whites) I got from Quickar

hey James,

thanks for the info. i too love the luxeon warm whites. probably one of a few here at CPF.

i have lots of em in use at home. spotlights and crystal display case. now that really is beautiful.

i use them for photos too. the color rendering is what i like.

thanks for the results. if you plan to take beam shots, good luck. mine just don't look good.

may i ask, which was better or easier to use?

hey n'den, yes the warm whites aren't real popular around here because they are of limited use in flashlights where you're trying to squeeze the very last fraction of a lumen out of the led. They are slightly dimmer than the non-warm ones I think.

I"m going to try the IO Moon led's in some lights with reflectors in them as they really need a reflector to have any throw at all. The star-o luxeons seem a perfect insert for a light that used to take a MR type bulb with the reflector built in. As i get something up and running for testing I'll post more pictures /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Overall I'm just having fun because there are so many great LED's sitting on my workbench at the moment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

yea, hosted on my website which was down for inexplicable reasons this afternoon for a while. They all are a'workin now though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hate tech support when they tell you nothing is wrong and everybody else is working, and yet the site comes back up only a few moments after you call and hang up and they go off and fix what they claimed wasn't a problem....
