Luxeon Star 5w vs. Legend LX

The other day I bought a Legend LX and I'm amazed at how much light this little light puts out. It's a lot brighter than my 2-D cell Maglight.

I also have a couple of 5w LS's on order and I'm curious as to how the two compare in brightness.

The Legend LX supposedly produces around 120 lumens (if the info I found on this board is correct) and the 5w LS produces around the same.

Is the 5W LS really that bright? Will a 5W LS flashlight cast a beam like my Legend LX will?

How does the perceived brightness of the two compare?

Thanks.

Where did all the flashlight freaks go? This is the right forum, isn't it?

I guess I'm all alone in my own thread, playing with my Brinkmann Max Million, Legend LX, Maglites, and LED keychains.

From the work that I've done and from what I've seen from Don I can say that a reflector and a 5W Luxeon can have a tight throw beam that compares favorably with the Legend LX and competes well with the E2E in brightness in the center focal point.

The McGuchi greenie is using the standard NX05 optics that Lumileds sells for the 1W Luxeon.

This makes the beam a wide beam of 20 degree angle or wider and with the larger die in the 5W makes the beam wider than the 1W. So this flashlight doesn't have a good throw. It does throw far, but, it is also nice and wide. I actually like it since it has enough spill for close up and still has a distance throw. It sits between a good tight beam like the Legend LX and a wide flood like the Inova X5. Makes for a awesome walking light.

LX is not 120 Lumens.

I don't know the lumens of the Legend LX, but is is slightly brighter than the SureFire E2 and E2e P60 bulb, which is 60 Lumens, so, slightly brighter would be 60-70 lumens.

There is a "mod" to take a SureFire P61 HOLA and put it into the LX, giving it 120 Lumens, but that is not stock (but I am going to do it soon!)

You also only get 20 min run time, instead of 60 min.

The 5w LED is a bit rare at the moment. You are going to have to wait like the rest of us. You can go to Craigs site and see the 5w green but thats the only one I've seen pics of. Sorry about that.
