I got a couple LUX III stars here that run DD from 3 'D' cells. I really want to put one of these in a 3x'D' M@G. Now I know I need a Hotlips from the SHOPPE, but what else is needed? Does the hotlips go into the place where the bulb went, can I still focus, will the star work, or do I need to pop it off the base... ya know... stuff like that
Thanks in advance

Jeff

I've been getting ready to do the same thing but with a Mag 3c. heres what I've found out:
Your going to need: a mag host, an emitter (taken off the heatsink board) a hotlips, some wire, solder, soldering iron, a pliers and some hex keys.

You can still focus the light, but you must cut down the reflector. An excellent write up can be found here This is for a 5 watt space needle II, but it is essentially the same build process for a 3 watt monster.

cool, I didnt think there was much to it. recientally I have been modding early 20th century flashlights 1910-1930's, these are relatively easy, I wasnt sure about the m@gs.
Thanks thesurefire

The vf of the star should be as high as possible for DD and you'll need a camless reflector.
If you can, I'd recommend you to add a downboy converter from the shoppe; DD is nice but a converter is very easy to set and takes care of the luxeon much better.
PS: happy birthday!

There is a page on the net that tells how to make a Space Needle, along with photos. You can probably search Google and find it, or search here and find it if you search enough. What you are making is almost the same thing except that you are using Alkaline D's instead of Lithium CR123's.

You need a Luxeon that has a higher Vf than what you are driving it with, or you need a little bit of resistance in the circuit.

Once you have the parts it looks like a pretty easy mod to do and produces a real good light.

As far as the LUX III, it is a TX1L, pulls 875mA off of 3 fresh 'D' cells. I have lots of small, bright lights (with short runtimes), I just wanted something rugged, bright, and long runtime... besides, I want to start camping again(wife and 3 boys 10,7,2) and a 3D m@g would help my wife feel safer against nature.
