I need another light like I need a hole in my head but I would like somthing powerfull. I like what I read about the Mag85 but is it becoming something of the past? About a year ago there would be a few posting per day.....what is the deal will led be up there soon with better run times?

...Mag85 ... is it becoming something of the past?

Sr Gringo: Do check out the Incandescent Forum; beyond that I think you will find that like a great deal in life - it depends. Many members here are like me, adrenaline junkies, waiting for the next cool thing. Others have a well-defined use for illumination in mind, and they are not so fickle.

I have a Mag85, use it regularly, and there is nothing else like it. On the other hand, there is lots of cool new stuff coming out all the time to distract us from our "real", "concrete" uses for light.

I think that the mag85 isn't becoming something of the past...but today there are a lot of new items that are very inportant for our hobby;)

for examle you can have a 2C mag that output 900+ T-L...and have more runtime than a mag85 that runs on nimh...

this can happend becouse you can buy 2 "C" li-ion that has 3,3Ah of capacity and the AW's incan smart driver for "C" sized mag that can extend the runtime...

so I think that if AW will come out with "D" sized Li-ion batteries and his "D" size version of the incan smart driver, the mag85 will be something really actual...

(mag3D, 3 "D" li-ion, D incan SD )

For less voltage, 7.5 volts therefore more room and more Ah, longer runtime the 5761 is brighter and easier to build. 5761 is almost 900 torch lumens, the WA1185 is just over 700 torch lumens. Soooooo many 5761 threads now. Search the key word: 5761. A two c-cell host, two AW lithium C cells, an AW 4 mode driver or a $1.20 NTC for soft start and a 5761 bulb and you got 32 minutes of 854 torch lumens. Use a 3D cell and 6s2p, 12 AA PowereX 2700s on a 5761 and you got an hour at that brightness. Works well in that combo in a Mag Charger too.

You could have bought C-cells 5761 for $155 in B/S/T so they are not too bad to make or buy already made.

1185 was the bulb but progress happens. Now a new bulb, 64430, is making 2250 torch lumens happen on 9.6-9.9 volts (1185 is just over 700 T-L). Hosts from 2D to 4C are being used for the 64430. More developement is happening with that.

possibly most of the users of flashlights, even ones that own such a lights, did learn that small size, greater runtime and a bit less output is way better for 110 % of the time one uses (or totes around) a light.
;)

ended up buying a fivemega creation....pretty excited. I think I need to restrain until Christmas time:sigh:

exactly!
I am quietly awaiting for AW's "D" sized Li-ion cell.
Until then I have 3 "C" sized Li-ions in my M@g85

To explain what Philippo says:
2xC cell of 3300 mAh = 6600 mAh
versus
6x14500's of 750 mAh each = 4500 mAh

The 2xC setup gives a longer runtime. You will understand how curious I am if the "D" cell comes out what the capacity of it will be (and what it will cost :) ). An even longer runtime as a result.

2xC 3300mah in serie is still 3300mah
2xC 3300mah in parrallell is 6600mah

Yes, ZeissOEM2, you're right. How stupid of me
Please forgive me, since I wasn't a flashaholic yet. :D

in my post I was talking about the mag85 with nimh that is the most built mag85 since the 14500 version (with FM's battery holder is 9 batteries: 3 slot in series of 3 batteries in parrallell) is 3*750= 2250mah

with D li-ion batteries the capacity may be over 7000mah if unprotected:twothumbs

Fm M*g1300L is 9x17500 -3x1100mah-3300mah

This 5761 Philips bulb, does anyone know how much it costs and who offers them here? I'm just curious since I can buy it via a suplier of mine.

Bulbconnection.com, use the search feature and type in : 5761
after delivery they are about $6 USD for small orders, cost is $4.95 USD. Several other suppliers have them but I have seen posted prices up to 3 times that amount. Google key word: "5761 bulb" or "5761 bulb price"

well, that is good news. A single bulb here in The Netherlands costs me about € 10,50 Surprising since Philips is a Dutch company. Bulb is made elsewhere I guess.

I don't think it's outdated at all. To me is a supremely useful incan that's inexpensive to run and produces a very satisfying amount of light in a solid package. Below I've included a link to a sales thread that you might be interested in.

Wouldn't 2C-sized protected li-ions be a better alternative now that AW sells them? Longer runtime I think, easier to charge (in a smart charger and C-adaptors) Unless you don't like to use li-ion batts, but prefer NiMh's.

nimh are safer than li-ion...and this is a really important thing...
LOOK HERE...sounds interesting:thumbsup::whistle:
