Does any one know what size tap and die to use for both ends of a
D-body mag? I am looking at xxx.jlindustrial.cxm but i don't have an idea of how to read the sizes they list.

Thanks for any info!

I am not sure - but I would guess that the threads are not done with a tap and die. They are most likely threaded on a lathe.

I think a tap that large would get pretty expensive. A 1 7/16 x 20 tap would be $135, from MSC direct.

from a previous post --

Maglight D cell body;

20 tpi, both ends.

Measuring the body at the head....

1.533 inches major (maximum reading on outside of threads)
1.511 inches minor (minimum reading at root of threads)

Measuring at the tailcap...
1.430 Tailcap major (outside of tailcap threads.
1.385 Body minor (inside threads)

In addition, the body on the tail end has a .185 deep smooth area at the very end for the O-ring to seat against. The diameter there is 1.440. The threads themselves are only about 1/2 inch, if that. The area beyond the threads is recessed, probably to is 1.440.

I don't think a die could be used to form the head-end threads, unless you skipped the o-ring groove.

Reproducing the original Mag head-end thread is a very easy job in a lathe, even a mini lathe, for the two-cell lights. Plus they'll turn out perfectly concentric.

I was thinking about getting a mini lathe, but unsure of the size that will work for 2D mags. I am really looking for a way to re-thread the bottom for the cap. I am wanting to cut down some 2D to 1D. I use a drill press to bore it out. and pipe cutter to cut them down.

here is what i have in mind for X-mas gifts this year.....

Any color but Black or Gray.
2D maglites cut down to 1D
possibly 3 AW 17670 in a tray with recharging plug.
WA 1185,but not 100% decided yet.
possibly AW regulated driver.
not decided yet on the charger.

Still trying to find the best place to buy mag cheap, but also in good color
I have a few each of silver, red , blue to use. but still looking for dark green ,purple, and copper.
