Hey guys...well I am thinking about buyign or makign a new hotwire...I now have a complete 2D ROP with camless medium stippled reflector, plus a mag85 with the same reflector, so I have enough flood lights...Now Im thinkign about building or buyign a mag hotwire thats pure THROW...I was thinking about a HID mod...Any and all suggestions would be great! and if posible please post links to threads showing these mods and possible beamshots...I also want a LED hotwire, but I can wait for that, right now its all about throw for me, lol...

Cost is kind of an issue though, Im thinking along the same line as the mag85 keeping it under say $180...I was thinking that maybe I shoukld just buy fivemegas new reflector with the optional cammed piece so that I can just turn my ROP and Mag85 into adjustable mini throw monsters, lol...Anyway all suggestions welcome, Thanks!

p.s. given the choice between different size mods I like the mag 2D body for size...

for throw you'll want a bigger reflector like that huge one that was offered here by someone. (not a lot of help I know)

If you want throw, I do not think you can beat an HID. I'm sure there is some monster halogen liight out there that will put out 5000 lumens for 2 or 3 minutes but how far it can throw that light is another question. I have a quad bored 3D Mag that holds 12 x 2000 Eites from CBP. With AWR's Hotdriver I run the Osram 625. It puts out a wall of light that turns nearby street lights off (the sensor thinks it's daytime). However, the filiment in the bulb is so big that the only way to smooth out the defect in the light is to use a heavy orange peel reflector. Your not going to throw very far with this type of reflector.

I have ordered a 3 inch Mag head from Fivemega to so if I a larger reflector will allow me to use a light orange peel reflector while still smoothing out the defect in the light. Even if this works, I will not get maximum through without a smooth reflector. I have tried a smooth reflector with 625 and the defect distorts the light causing the throw to be underwhelming.

I own a number of HID's incuding the Helios and the X1. These are truly incredible lights. But in my opinion the best thrower I own is the very first HID I purchased, the 24 Watt Brightstar. It has a good clear glass lens a flawless, smoth reflector and a nice tight beam. At a measured 50 feet the hot spot is about 10 inches.

On a clear night I can light up a wild hog at a thousand yards. I can't do this with either the Helios or the X1. Moreover, I do not think the size of the reflector has as much to do with throw as some have suggested. I'm not saying they are wrong, I'm simply saying that my experience does not match up with this. Case in point. I own a Wolf Eyes Crocodile. This is a 35 watt Hid with a reflector that is over 4 inches in diameter. Don't get me wrong, this thing puts out a lot of light and it's a thrower. However, in my experience, the Brightstar is a better thrower.

I don't know if this information helps but I wanted to point out that a monnster thrower may not only be dependent on the diameter of the reflector. It's a piece to the puzzle but tnot the complete answer.

Good Luck

Ok, thanks for your imput...I was thinkign about just buying a good spotlight but I just love the idea of a "sleeper" light...thats why I love mag mods so much, cause everyone knows what a maglite is but when you turn yours on people are like wow, thats really bright...lol...kind of like a crappy looking car with alot of power under the hood that no one knows about until they race you...
