Simply, given you have a three AA to D holder, loaded with the right NIMH's. Can those be recharged in the holder? In other words, will a charger that recharges D cells charge all three AA's in the holder safely? And would it be safe to charge multiple holders at once?

Your charger must be a pack-capable charger, ie. capable of charging battery packs. Usually these are the high-end chargers with clips instead of holders.
I use the Maha C777 to charge my entire Mag85 pack at one shot. The C777 can accept 1-12 NiMH cells. Other good chargers include the Triton and some other RC battery pack chargers.
DO NOT try to charge these in a regular D-cell charger. The D-cell charger expects 1.2V and each of these "3toD-cells" generates 3.6V.
