Maglite 2D ROP or 1x18650 thrower?

Are the maglite mods comparable to LED throwers? Do they outdo them?

Specifically how would a 2D cell Roar of the Pelican maglite mod fare next to say one of the 1 18650 cell Q5 Cree LED throwers?

I should add that I'm asking with a view to spending £55 ($110) on a 2D ROP to replace a £20 ($40) thrower from DX.

Many, many times brighter. More lumens, more lux, much better color rendition. It would be as a Kawasaki 250 is to a Ducati 1000. Plus, chicks dig men that burn tungsten.

Really? Blimey. Thanks.

Couple of other questions which I have tried to search for on here and failed:-

Is there the possibility of anything going "bang" using a ROP?

and,

How long do the bulbs last before they need replacing?

Yes. I've never had a lamp pedestal melt but others have. I'll speculate that it may have something to do with resistance in some lamps maybe due to inconsistent potting.

I don't remember having a lamp blow up but others have. On page two of the Race To Failure thread there are pics and text that detail, somewhat, these types of failures.

I don't remember what the life rating is but I've got one that has well over 200 hrs on it. Might be closer to 300 hrs now that I think about it. Your mileage may very.

ROPs are one of the most robust of HotWire mods I know of.

I had a Mag85 run for 30 minutes straight in my bed

Yes, it got hot, could only be touched for a few seconds (the whole body) but the plastic lamp pedestral is still OK.

Please, tell me you are joking.

I'm more of an LED guy but the ROP will out throw and easily out lumen those LED throwers.

It also has a much more impressive beam.

The ROP seems to be one of the more robust hotwires.

got bored, decided to see for myself :) I don't own a modern dedicated 18650 powered thrower, but the Task Force Cree is touted as being pretty up to date in performance these days. I figured I'd combine it with 3 other known LED throwers from the past to try to make sure there is no room left for any doubt.

Wow! Thanks for that! Quite clear then!

One last question - is there a mod I can do myself to an old 5D maglite for $110 or less that is comparable to or outdoes the 2D ROP?

Re: Maglite 2D ROP or 1x18650 thrower from Dealextreme?

I found this description of a Mag85 mod using a 5D Maglite host:

-MAG85...red body and head, black tailcap and bezel...
-5D maglite host
-UCL Lens
-Camless Medium stippled reflector (.377 hole)
-Modified Switch for less resistance
-9 x 4/5 sub C 2200mAH battery pack
-PVC sch. 40 battery tube spacer
-Smart Charger + everything needed to use it...
-3 WA1185 potted bulbs (one in light, 2 extra)

I'm guessing I could copy this but apparently though it only puts out "about 850 lumens" whereas the 2D ROP puts out "about 1000 lumens".

Re: Maglite 2D ROP or 1x18650 thrower from Dealextreme?

The WA1185 bulb in a Mag85 should be good for ~1,200 lm.

Re: Maglite 2D ROP or 1x18650 thrower from Dealextreme?

The lumens can change dramatically based on small changes in voltage to the bulb. Most 4/5 sub-c cells are high current "hobby-style" cells that should actually hold up very well and perform at or better than most 2D configurations. -but then again, a 5D mag is quite cumbersome :)
