Does anyone here know of some easy mods I can make to my 5D Maglite which is just gathering dust on my floor? How about some Welch Allyn bulb that would fit?
Have you tried the Mag Xenon bulbs? Also I have heard of people running a 4-cell bulb on 5 batteries, although it is an iffy thing, I believe it varies with the individual bulbs. I do know for sure that most 3-cell bubls will not survive long with 4 batteries, although they are bright as heck (for a little while, at least)...
Well, I currently have a Magnum Star Krpton in it. Will the Xenon bulb really make a huge difference? I might try the 4 cell bulb. I noticed that Inretech has a Helios(3 x 5W Luxeons) mod for a 6D. Will that just mean a weak Helios on the 5D?
I believe the Streamlight SL35X lamp is even more powerful than the TigerLight lamp, and appears to have very similar dimensions. I also think that it is rated for 6-volts.
5 D-cell NiMH rechargeable batteries would total 6-volts, and would drop right in there with no modifications necessary.
D-cell NiMH's are available in up to 9000mAh capacity ratings I think, and they should be able to deliver plenty of current to power that 20-watt SL35X for quite a while. I'm guessing that you could get close to 2 hours of run time out of that setup. That would be awesome IMHO.
I think the stock Mag switch could handle the 3+ amps of current, but I honestly don't know for certain.
The PR-based adapter I made used some Molex pin sockets that are rated for up to 3 amps. I don't know if the SL35X lamp pins are the same diameter as the TigerLight lamp's, as I don't actually have one.
This may not be as exciting as an LED mod, but I thought I'd just throw the idea out there anyway.
