Maglite battery meter

I seen at work one of the guys had a really cheap rayovac flashlight with a battery meter. I was wondering if anyone has put a battery meter on there maglite. I think it would be a very helpful option but I'm not sure on how to do it or if it could be done. Also would this cause any problems with the flashlight. I would be putting it in a SSC P7 maglite if it can be done. Let me know what you think.
