Hi all.

just wondering which lens you Maglite modders use with your lights? Is the stock glass (ie: non-boro) from somewhere like DX, ok?

From memory, the glass lens I used with my MR16 halogen was OEM for a rechargeable D cell.. not sure if it was borosilicate or not.. It was not exactly cheap though..

I'm looking at taking my light to potentially 75m but definitely 50m..

I have use 2 of the DX lenses and they were fine to 50 meters although I dont really trust them.
I use 4mm acrylic.
I have used a stock maglite lens to 40 meters!

Yeah I'm the same..I'm not sure I trust them either.. I have heard of people laminating two lenses with an epoxy adhesive though..

The lense that I have on my halogen mag has been to about 50 metres (Longreef wrecks in Sydney).. mind you if it cracked I was only going to lose an MR16 globe and perhaps the connector (not too exxy)... A lens failure in my next light (4 or 5 X R2) will cost me substantially more I think!

Does the acrylic scratch easily?

I go to the local cheap shop (I think yanks call them "nickel&dime stores) and buy a 2" magnifying glass.

The lens out of that makes a superb Maglite lens for hotwires; it literally maginifies the hotspot.

Question for the Moderators...

why was this thread moved? I'm asking a question with a diving specific application..

I didn't know that maglites were waterproof to that level of submersion. Do you have to modify the stock neck gasket or switch boot? Would you say stock mag construction is safe for a shallow night swim with any battery chemistry? I know I've heard air hiss out of the neck when loading some snug fitting cells into my Mag C torches...

I am certain the Maglite is not watertight.

Particularly around the switch seal - that just sits there, so the torch would fill with (salt) water very quickly.

Well before 50M I would expect. I wouldn't want to try taking a Maglite to 5M. Maybe a dive torch would be a better option.
